About Us

History of Gympie

The town of Gympie has an important and colourful history, from being cited as the "Town that saved Queensland from Bankruptcy" to being the home of Andrew Fisher, Labor's second Prime Minister.
Everybody is invited to visit our Museum where you can find out just how Gympie saved Queensland and discover more of the region's past and present. The Museum houses a vast collection of documentation, artifacts and photographs dating from the discovery of gold in 1867 by James Nash to the recently closed operations of the Gympie Eldorado Goldmine.

Steam Festival

The Gympie Steam festival is held in October each year at the Museum to celebrate the era of steam featuring its unique 1899 Walkers Cornish Boiler, believed to be the only such boiler operating in Australia.

Museum Markets

The Markets are located in the surrounds of the Museum with Lake Alford and its parks and picnic areas as a beautifully maintained backdrop. 1st, 3rd and 5th Sunday of each month @ 7am - 12pm

Steaming Days

The Davey-Paxman Boiler of the Colonial era, and other related historic machinery will be operating. 10am to 2pm. Held on the first Monday of the month (except Jan and Oct)

On Tuesday the 21st of May, the Year 5 students of Peregian Beach College set off to find GOLD – and thanks to the Gympie Gold Mining and Historical Museum, they did! EUREKA!
I enjoyed the mineshafts because I thought you could only get gold from the surface. I didn't know you could go 12 levels underground! Cool! I loved going there and I am sure other schools will enjoy it as well.

My favorite thing we done was going to the school room. They used to do things at school that I never knew of. They have lots of different rules to what we have now. It was cool how we had to wait to be told to sit down and read out the rules.

About Us

The Gympie Gold Mining and Historical Museum is operated by the Gympie & District Historical Society Inc, a wholly volunteer operated organisation, with the Museum development and operation the most significant of its objectives. The Society was formed in 1965 to establish the Museum on the site of the former No 2 South Great Eastern Mine which was the second richest mine on the Gympie Goldfields
