the story behind the house

Back in the winter of 1966, Maurice and Jan Mead were taking a stroll along the Nepean Highway in Sorrento just above where the boat launching ramp is now. Jan was six months pregnant with their first child. They passed a house with the name “Samantha” on a board on the fence. Maurice and Jan decided then and there that, if their unborn child was a girl, she would be called Samantha.

Whilst this decision was being made, 7 year old Jim Woods was somewhere on the Samantha property. More than three decades later that same Jim Woods married Samantha – the girl named after his family home. And so it should be no surprise that Jim and Sam’s Portsea home also carries the name Samantha.

We hope you’ll get as much joy from “Samantha” as we do.

Things to do

The Sorrento / Portsea area
and the Mornington Peninsula
generally have enough activities
to keep you busy for a lifetime.
Here are some of the things
we like to do:

Our local walk

From Samantha, walk to the end of Lagoon Court and turn right into Franklin Road. Heading south for about 200m, you will cross Hotham Road and continue south on the Franklin Road extension. At the end of Franklin Road, continue into the Mornington Peninsula National Park and follow the track down to the surf beach.

Turn right at the beach and it’s perhaps 1 km to the Portsea Surf Lifesaving Club. You’ll easily see the building down the beach.

Climb the stairs by the Lifesaving Club and walk back along the road to the roundabout where Back Beach Road meets Hotham Road. Turn right into Hotham Road and its less than a kilometre back to Franklin Road where you turn left to return to Lagoon Court.

This takes about an hour at a leisurely pace.

Waves

Mornington Peninsula

Point Nepean National Park

Having been preserved for military purposes, this part of the coast displays untouched natural coastal vegetation over a large area. It’s got a very interesting history. You can walk or hire bikes. Our favourite is the Range Walk. Make sure you climb the Monash Light Tower to get the best view of Port Philip Heads and the wild coastal terrain.

It gets extremely busy in the summer but a cold beer in one of the best beer gardens in the world is hard to beat.

Restaurants

Sorrento now hosts a number of high-quality restaurants. We like Aquolina for its bustling atmosphere and authentic northern Italian cuisine.

You will probably have to travel a little to visit some wineries. It’s about forty minutes to the Red Hill area where there are any number of cellar doors and restaurants.
