Amateur photography insurance products aren't common in Australia so an alternative is to insure your equipment through a travel insurance policy if you're travelling, or on your home contents insurance policy as specified portable items.
If you're only after cover while travelling then a travel insurance policy is a good alternative for non-professionals. Many policies will cover $2,000-3,000 worth of equipment without needing to specify individual items but check with the insurer for details.

Adding photography cover to an existing home contents policy can be as simple as contacting the insurer and asking them to list your equipment as specified portable items on the policy. This would protect your equipment in and out of the home. Business use may not be covered so make sure to check with the insurer for specifics.
