Cathryn-McCormackAcademic Dancing is a website I’ve set up to share my thoughts on the world and my PhD studies.

As a woman from a working class background who had only ever worked for small business or been self employed, moving into higher education about ten years ago was a massive culture shock. I had to learn to dance my way around new culture and unwritten rules of higher education.

My love of dancing started as a child. It took years of nagging my mother before my devout Christian family allowed me to go to ballet lessons. In my 20′s, at a large geographic and conceptual distance from my family, I took up belly dancing and started performing and teaching professionally a few years later. 25 years later I maintain my passion for dance and practice both ballet and belly dancing regularly.

This blog is where I write about what is of interest and importance to me. Topics include work in progress on my PhD, comments on mainstream media and academic articles, thoughts about universities and higher education in general, and of course dancing and dance teaching.
