Beacon

A beacon is an intentionally conspicuous device used to attract attention to a specific location. A beacon uses radar, radio and/or sonar signals to indicate where it is located. Beacons are used for many things, but are particularly important for marine navigation and safety.

As of 1 January, 2019, certain commercial vessels operating in Australia must have a self-deploying Emergency Positioning Indicating Radio Beacon (EPIRB). Crew members may not always have time to deploy an emergency beacon, and so the new requirements are designed to address this issue.

If you are looking to buy a beacon for your vessel, start by reading the Australian Maritime Safety Authority's guide to buying a beacon. When you are ready to buy, visit C.H. Smith Marine or Whitworths.
