  • NEW Another Queensland Carnival Tilt Inevitable

    Wednesday, 1st May 2024
Renowned two-time Ladbrokes Tasmanian Horse of the Year, The Inevitable, is gearing up for another interstate venture, following a spirited grass gallop in Hobart last Sunday, reports tasracing.com.au. Guided by trainer John Keys, the seasoned 8YO son of Dundeel is bound for Queensland. The target is the Gr3 BRC Sprint, a 1300m challenge at Doomben on May 25th, followed by the prestigious Gr1 Stradbroke Handicap at Eagle Farm on June 15th. Despite a lukewarm performance in the recent Ladbrokes Summer Racing Festival, where he clinched second in the Conquering Stakes and fourth in the Tasmanian Stakes, The Inevitable has regained his stride, much to the satisfaction of his trainer. "His Sunday gallop showcased his form admirably, and we're all set for Queensland come Tuesday," Keys remarked. "The veterinary assessment was overwhelmingly positive, indicating he's in prime condition for the journey ahead." During Sunday's training session, The Inevitable was joined by stablemate Naval Anthem, who, along with Tsunami Sam, will accompany him northward from the Keys stable. Keys anticipates inclement weather in Queensland in the forthcoming months and assures that the equine trio selected for the journey are well-equipped to handle such conditions. Last year, The Inevitable had his sights set on the $3,000,000 Stradbroke Handicap, only to be sidelined due to a minor setback following his commendable third-place finish in the 2023 All-Star Mile.

  • NEW Burke Has Two UK Classic Weekend Contenders

    Wednesday, 1st May 2024
UK Trainer Karl Burke has two strong contenders – one for each of the UK Classics this weekend, reports racingpost.com. He has Night Raider (Dark Angel-Dorraar, by Shamardal) in the Gr1 2000 Guineas on Saturday and Fallen Angel (Too Darn Hot-Agnes Stewart, by Lawman) in the Gr1 1000 Guineas on Sunday. "He [has] a lot of potential and a lot of ability and I don't think I've seen a horse work better in the 23 years we've been at Middleham," said Burke of Night Raider. "He's got an awfully high cruising speed and he can quicken off it as well. Clifford Lee rode him for the first time in a long time and said it was like driving a car with ten gears. Every time you move on him he goes forward. Danny Tudhope loves him and I wouldn't mind having a bet that there's nothing travelling any better than him a furlong and a half out and we'll see what we do after that." He is one of fourteen horses for the 2000 Guineas aiming to topple favourite City Of Troy (Justify-Together Forever, by Galileo), and he is unbeaten in two starts to date. Fallen Angel is the current favourite for the 1000 Guineas, and Burke said, "I think they've got us to beat. I know Ballydoyle will give you plenty of excuses for Ylang Ylang's defeat in the Moyglare but she's got more than ten lengths to make up on us. On all known form I think we deserve to be favourite." Fallen Angel won three of her four starts at two and has yet to run at three.
  • NEW Super Easy Takes Up Residence at Roselee Park

    Wednesday, 1st May 2024
Former Hallmark Stud stallion Super Easy has arrived at Roselee Park in Western Australia where he will stand for an introductory service fee of $5,500 (inc GST), reports tbwa.net.au. Perth trainer Brock Lewthwaite signed Super Easy (Darci Brahma-Parfore, by Gold Brose) to join King's Troop at the Serpentine-based stud operated by Wayne and Tracy Rodwell. "Super Easy will have his old paddock and it's a timely transfer with his mare Bonny Lass winning the Group 1 BCD Sprint at Te Rapa in February," Lewthwaite said. Super Easy came to hand as an early-season 2YO winning on debut at Trentham for trainer John Sargeant, prior to going down a nose in the Gr2 Eclipse Stakes (1200m) at Ellerslie. He took Singapore by storm winning 9 Listed-level races on the way to back-to-back Horse Of The Year Awards for trainer Michael Freedman and the Joy N Happiness Stable. Champion jockey Joao Moreira, who rode Super Easy in the LR 3YO Sprint at Kranji, added, "I've won Derby races and Cup races on some very good horses but this horse is something special. Right from Day 1 he has given me that special feel and riding him in his races is such a pleasure." Super Easy has sired over 100 individual winners of 300 races, and apart from Bonny Lass, his Stakes winners include Prom Queen, Sheezallmine, Super Strike & Spine Tingle in New Zealand and Easy Eddie (Gr3 ATC Maurice McCarten Hcp) & Dream Queen (LR MVRC William Crockett Stakes) in Australia.

  • Snitzel Heads 2024 Arrowfield Stud Roster

    Wednesday, 1st May 2024
Arrowfield Stud has announced the fees, all payable on Live Foal, for the seven stallions on its 2024 roster. Arrowfield Chairman John Messara says, “Four unchanged fees, two reductions and one modest increase reflects the more conservative economic environment in which we’re now operating. However, Arrowfield’s 2024 roster offers breeders diverse, high-quality opportunities to achieve racing dreams and sale-ring profits. Messara revealed, “This season alone, our four sires with two or more crops of racing age have generated more than $100 million in returns to breeders and owners, and compiled more than 330 winners including 21 stakes-winners. We are certainly happy to commit the majority of Arrowfield’s broodmares to these seven horses this coming Spring.” The exceptional four-time Champion Sire Snitzel heads the 2024 Arrowfield roster at a fee of $247,500 inc. GST, after exceeding $40 million in yearling sales for the fifth time in the past 8 years and reaching a career total of 142 stakes-winners – an imposing 9.3% of all his runners. He remains a potent sire of 2YOs – his 2021 crop has a 22% Stakes Performers/Runners strike rate – but his versatility is equally notable. His 2023/24 stakeswinners come from four crops and have won black type races from 1000 to 1700 metres. Snitzel’s influence continues to grow as a sire of 15 stakes-siring sons and valuable stallion prospects including Shinzo, Switzerland & Prost. He is also a valuable sire of broodmares with 31 stakes-winners now on his damsire record, among them this season’s Group 1 stars Celestial Legend and Velocious.

  • Leading 3YO Sires Dundeel and The Autumn Sun

    Wednesday, 1st May 2024
Australia’s current leading sire of 3YOs Dundeel stands will stand at Arrowfield for $88,000 inc. GST, in 2024 and on every metric he confirms his claim to elite stallion status. For example, among Australia’s current top 10 sires, only Snitzel & Written Tycoon exceeded his Gr1 winners/Foals strike rate, and only I Am Invincible had more Gr1 winners (9 vs 8) with the same number of runners. Dundeel’s triple Group 1-winning son Militarize heads the current Australian Timeform 3YO rankings with a figure of 124+ and the sensational Randwick Guineas & Doncaster Mile winner Celestial Legend is already his leading earner with $3.3 million prizemoney.  This season’s Listed winner Epimeles and Group 2-placed Duvana have underscored Dundeel’s ability, unique among High Chaparral-line stallions, to sire talented juveniles. The Autumn Sun, sire this month of Group 1 Classic winners Autumn Angel and Vibrant Sun, as well as the historic Australasian Oaks G1 trifecta, will be offered at an unchanged fee of $66,000 inc. GST, subject to his recovery from a pelvic injury. The Autumn Sun’s record of 6 first-crop Group 1 performers from his first 85 runners places him in the company of champion sires at the same stage, and outstanding breeder support gives him the quality and the numbers to maintain his upward trajectory.
  • Maurice and Admire Mars Well Received

    Wednesday, 1st May 2024
Maurice, whose 2024 fee is $55,000 inc. GST, was re-introduced to the Australian yearling market this year and achieved very pleasing results, including 33 lots sold at Magic Millions & Inglis Easter for an average of $197,000 and a top price of $600,000. Clearly, buyers have not missed the excellent 10% Stakes-winners/Runners ratio of his 2020 crop, headed by Group 3 winner and Queensland Oaks G1 prospect Genzano and Group 1-placed Listed winner Ganbare. Maurice is the first shuttle stallion to sire first-crop Group 1 winners in both hemispheres at 1200m (Mazu & Pixie Knight) and 2200m+ (Hitotsu & Geraldina). With a proven affinity for Danehill genetics and around 370 yearlings, foals & pregnancies bred at $44,000 and $82,500, Maurice is a very attractive option for breeders in 2024. The first Australian yearlings by Admire Mars, whose fee remains at $22,000 inc. GST, have been very well-received with 27 of 28 lots sold across all sales for an average price close to 5 times his fee. Eleven Admire Mars yearlings made $100,000 or more, with a top price of $300,000 paid by Dalziel Bloodstock & Moody Racing for the filly out of Adamina. Other buyers include Busuttin Racing, McEvoy Mitchell Racing, Boomer Bloodstock, Hong Kong Bloodstock, Danny O’Brien, Ken Keys, Domeland Racing and Gai Waterhouse & Adrian Bott. As a three-time Group 1 winner over 1600m at two & three, in Japan and Hong Kong, Admire Mars is one of the best-performed Australian-based stallions in his price range.

  • Plenty on Offer by Promising Arrowfield Duo

    Wednesday, 1st May 2024
Castelvecchio, winner of the Champagne S. G1 & Rosehill Guineas G1, will stand this season at Arrowfield Stud at $22,000 inc. GST. His first 10 runners include Sydney stakes-placed colt El Castello, three other placegetters and the smart Phillip Stokes-trained filly Comanche Miss, 4th on debut in the Redoute’s Choice S. LR.  Promising first-crop Castelvecchio 2YOs seen at trials & jumpouts include Shangri La Spring (trained by Gai Waterhouse & Adrian Bott), Sculptor (Gary Portelli), The Adige (Busuttin & Young), Where’s Brittany (Leon & Troy Corstens), Vexxy & Zozo Narni (Richard & Will Freedman), Canya Berich (Jack Bruce), Elizabass (Gavin Bedggood), Malbork Castle (Richard Litt) & Our Allie Be (Stephen Marsh). History-making triple Classic hero Hitotsu will stand his second season at $22,000 inc. GST and his first foals from a full book of 162 mares are keenly awaited this coming Spring. A new location for Showtime will be announced soon.
  • Payne Aims for Derby Repeat with Bold Soul

    Wednesday, 1st May 2024
Trainer Patrick Payne, whose hordes are in top form, is poised for a back-to-back triumph in the South Australian Derby as Bold Soul gears up for the Group 1 spectacle at Morphettville this Saturday, reports racing.com. Bold Soul (Embellish-Twin Soul, by Singspiel), extended his winning streak to five out of eight starts with a triumphant performance in the Gr 3 Chairman's Stakes last Saturday, guided skilfully by Jake Noonan. "He's pulled up really well on Sunday after his win and I couldn't be happier with him moving forward to the Derby. I've got my horses staying in the Adelaide Hills with my sister Michelle looking after them and they are in a good space," Payne said. Following in the path of Dunkel, who won the Derby for Payne exactly a year ago, Bold Soul has conquered both the Launceston Guineas and the Tasmanian Derby en route to his quest for South Australian Derby glory, and has drawn barrier 12 for Saturday's challenge. With a commendable record of nine victories from 22 outings, Payne has exhibited exceptional management of Bold Soul's career trajectory. Discussing his other Group winner, Seonee (Winning Rupert), from last Saturday's Morphettville meeting, Payne declared, "She, for the time being, will remain in SA with Michelle and may possibly run in the Centaurea Stakes on Goodwood Day. It will be her first test at 2000m but she defied the doubters at a mile on Saturday."

  • Hawkesbury Race Club Anticipates Record Turnout

    Wednesday, 1st May 2024
Western Sydney's Hawkesbury Race Club has received a record 245 nominations for its massive 10-race Hawkesbury Cup program this Saturday, reports racingnsw.com.au. "We are thrilled with the response we have had to this Saturday's stand-alone event, with record prizemoney of over $1.8 million on offer…the track is currently rated a Soft 5 and if we can hopefully avoid some rain forecast for later in the week, I'm confident that we will present an ideal surface for the 10-race card," said Hawkesbury Race Club's CEO, James Heddo. 2022's Hawkesbury Cup winner Kirwan's Lane will lead the Cup field out, having recently been retired and retrained to pursue a new career in polo. The scene will be set on Friday 3 May with the inaugural "Panthers Hawkesbury Race Club Sports Lunch Calcutta" to be held at Western Sydney Conference Centre, with over 400 guests booking their seats. Heddo added, "We aim to make this weekend a spectacular sporting event for the Greater Western Sydney Community and look forward to welcoming everyone trackside on the day." Gates open at 10.30am and the first race is scheduled for 11:20am.
  • Bowman Hoping to Springboard off Gr1 Success

    Wednesday, 1st May 2024
Following his victory aboard Invincible Sage (Thronum) in the Group 1 Chairman's Sprint Prize at Sha Tin, jockey Hugh Bowman has his sights set on the mid-week meeting at Happy Valley with six promising mounts, according to scmp.com. The triumph marked Bowman's second elite-level win since relocating to Hong Kong, a feat he achieved in partnership with veteran trainer David Hall, a staunch supporter throughout his Hong Kong tenure. Reflecting on the significance of the victory, Bowman conceded the rarity of such opportunities in the realm of Group 1 races compared to his native Australia. Despite setbacks from injuries and suspensions this season, Bowman holds third position in the jockeys' premiership, boasting 49 wins. He aims to augment this tally at Happy Valley's Wednesday night fixture. Among his contenders, Bowman pinpoints Galaxy Witness (Star Witness), Celestial Colours (Zoustar), and Diamond Soars (Deep Field) as standout prospects. Galaxy Witness, dropping back to Class Three, offers strong potential, having displayed consistent performances despite a winless streak since 2022. Celestial Colours, trained by Jamie Richards, enters the France Galop Cup off a credible fifth-place finish, maintaining Bowman's confidence. Additionally, Bowman anticipates Diamond Soars, trained by Ricky Yiu Poon-fai, to capitalise on a grade reduction in the Maisons-Laffitte Handicap, citing the gelding's suitability for Class Five competition.

  • Climbing Star Targets Lucrative Goodwood

    Wednesday, 1st May 2024
A fortnight after winning the Gr1 Robert Sangster Stakes, Climbing Star (Zoustar-Bryony, by Fastnet Rock) will run in the $1 million Gr1 Goodwood Handicap on Saturday week at Morphettville, reports racing.com. "We're going to head that way (Goodwood)," trainer Phillip Stokes said. "This will be her final run, we'll give her a break and I think we could target her at something really nice in the spring. She's only just started to furnish and fill into her frame. She'd shown us some really impressive things in her work but we were never able to get her to replicate it on raceday for whatever reason. At one stage we were experimenting with her trips because we thought that maybe she was looking for 1400m or a mile – some of the jockeys suggested that she would run out those sort of trips. I went back and looked at her half-brother Samson – he was an out and out sprinter – and I thought she might be the same and ever since we trained her like that this preparation, she's been a different horse. Instant Celebrity probably showed me that less is more (with the fillies) but in saying that, the race (Goodwood) is shaping up a lot harder this year than it was the year she ran in it."
  • I Am Invincible Heads Yarraman Park’s 2024 Fees

    Wednesday, 1st May 2024
Yarraman Park’s champion sire I Am Invincible is on track for a third consecutive Champion Australian Sire Title and is poised to become the first Australian stallion in history to sire the winners of over $30 million in a season. “He’s had an exceptional season and is only $1 million short of breaking the all time record for seasonal earnings in this country, which is a phenomenal record,” said Arthur Mitchell. “He has nearly 10% SW to runner and this season they include Move to Strike, a Group I-winning 2YO colt in New Zealand and that wonderful mare Imperatriz, who has won 10 Group I races and had more G1 wins in the world than any other horse in this racing season. “She is about to embark on her career as a broodmare and in saying that I Am Invincible mares are already making their mark and I think he will ultimately become a very dominant broodmare sire.” In the sale ring, I Am Invincible has averaged over $600,000 at both Inglis Easter and Magic Millions with 10 yearlings this year selling for $1 million or more and his filly from Group I winner Booker set a new sales benchmark for her sire when selling for $3 million. “The filly from Booker is the second highest priced yearling filly ever sold in Australia behind only the $10 million Winx filly and 10% of yearlings by I Am Invincible make $1 million or more and that is a phenomenal achievement and there is more to come,” Mitchell concluded. I Am Invincible will be priced at $275,000 inc GST.

  • Hellbent and Brave Smash Augment Yarraman Roster

    Wednesday, 1st May 2024
I Am Invincible’s Group I-winning son Hellbent continues to produce a quality stream of winners headed by dual Group I winning mare Magic Time and Group winners Benedetta and Hell Hath No Fury, not to mention brilliant Inglis Millennium 2YO winner Fully Lit. His fee will remain at $38,500 inc GST. “He’s had an incredible year and we are so happy with the way Hellbent is progressing for a horse at a lower fee. He is now clearly the leading third crop sire and is $2 million in front of his nearest rival,” said Harry Mitchell. “It’s been really exciting for us and we see such a bright future for this horse going forward. Interestingly, he is also running third on the 4YO Sires List behind only Vinnie and Zoustar, which tells you how durable and sound his stock are. “He’s leaving horses that train on which is so important in this day and age.” Brave Smash (Jpn) was a new addition for Yarraman last spring and he too remains at the same fee of $33,000 inc GST. Having sired 22 Australian winners this season that include Group winners Kimochi and Brave Mead, Brave Smash is well on his way to building on the positive start he made last year. Brave Smash has also sired two smart winners in Hong Kong from just three runners. “We couldn’t be happier to see how his horses have trained on from two to three and Kimochi is undoubtedly a high-class filly with three Gr1 placings to go with her Gr2 Light Fingers win and $1 million in prizemoney,” Harry Mitchell said. “She beat Learning to Fly when she won the Light Fingers and the honesty and consistency of a filly like her is a great ad for the stallion. He’s got the Japanese pedigree so there are no limitations and we’ve sent a lot of I Am Invincible mares to him as Kimochi is also bred on the same cross.” Apart from her first two race starts, Kimochi has raced exclusively in Black Type races and all bar one of them have been either Group 1 or 2 with her efforts putting her among the highest rated fillies this season, while Brave Mead has also raced almost exclusively in Black Type company winning the Gr3 MRC Manfred Stakes and Listed ATC Fireball Stakes. Ill-fated Brave Halo was another high-class prospect winning his first three starts in WA at two before venturing to Melbourne to finish a close fourth in the GrI MRC Blue Diamond Stakes, so there is no doubt Brave Smash can get a serious horse capable of matching strides with the best.

  • Highview Stud to Stand Snitzel’s Mr Mozart

    Wednesday, 1st May 2024
New Zealand’s Highview Stud is set to welcome Mr Mozart, an Australian-bred stallion by Arrowfield’s renowned sire Snitzel, to its roster. Trained by Michael, Wayne, and John Hawkes, Mr Mozart boasts an impressive record, capturing five victories out of 16 starts and accumulating $796,900 in earnings. Notable among his triumphs is the Gr2 Phar Lap Stakes, where he outshone esteemed competitors such as Never Been Kissed and Fangirl. Additionally, he clinched victories in the Gr3 Doncaster Prelude, Gr3 Hawkesbury Guineas, and Listed Exford Plate, displaying talent across Sydney and Melbourne tracks. Brent Gillovic of Highview Stud expressed excitement about adding a son of Snitzel to their lineup, citing the stallion's stellar Australian pedigree and proven racing success. Partnering with James Chapman of Jamieson Park, the stud secured Mr Mozart, leveraging Chapman's experience with Mr Mozart's dam, Euro Angel, and their shared enthusiasm for the stallion's potential. Chapman pointed to Mr Mozart's suitability for the New Zealand market, highlighting his robust build, pedigree, and performance. With plans to support the stallion with quality broodmares – breeding rights will be available – Chapman anticipates producing offspring tailored for success in the burgeoning New Zealand racing scene. Mr Mozart will stand for $6,000 + GST.

  • Luck Could Be a Fortune for Oscar in Adelaide

    Wednesday, 1st May 2024
Dynamic Perth sprinter, Oscar’s Fortune (Rich Enuff), is set to embark on a new chapter as he heads eastward following his run in the prestigious Gr1 The Goodwood (1200m) at Morphettville in a fortnight under the guidance of trainer Dion Luciani. The upcoming premier sprint event in Adelaide promises a notable Western Australian presence with the inclusion of the illustrious mare, Amelia’s Jewel (Siyouni), in the $1 million spectacle. This marks the third consecutive encounter between Oscar’s Fortune and Amelia’s Jewel, following their recent clashes in the Roma Cup (1100m) and The Quokka (1200m), where Oscar’s Fortune Rich Enuff clinched victory in the former and secured a commendable third position in the latter behind Overpass and Amelia’s Jewel. Having shown deep consistency in his nine career starts to date, including a gallant second in the Winterbottom Stakes (1200m) at Ascot last December, Oscar’s Fortune, owned and bred by Loloma Farm's Kevin Fowler, is poised for another shot at Group 1 glory. Fowler expressed optimism, especially with the handicapper’s favorable allocation of 53.5kg for Oscar’s Fortune offering a competitive edge against Amelia’s Jewel. The decision to transition eastward was solidified post-Quokka, with Fowler affirming William Pike's continued partnership with his horse. While the prospect of an imminent return to Perth remains uncertain, Fowler is inclined to keep Oscar’s Fortune under Luciani's tutelage in Melbourne, eyeing lucrative million-dollar races.
  • Sunlight Sibling Debuts at Canterbury

    Wednesday, 1st May 2024
Race three at Canterbury today for the 2YOs will feature $2.6 million yearling Clean Energy (Zoustar-Solar Charged, by Charge Forward). The full-sister to Gr1 winner Sunlight and Gr3 winner Sisstar was purchased by Yulong at the Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale from the Widden Stud draft and is a trial winner for the Waterhouse/Bott stable. Joining the filly as a debutant in the same race is $650,000 yearling Private Life (Written Tycoon-Aliyana Tilde, by Snitzel) who runs for Chris Waller, and was purchased from Arrowfield Stud by Tom Magnier at the same sale. Private Life is also a trial winning colt. Not much in the field has any raceday experience, however one stand-out is Toque (Street Boss-Gorgons, by Exceed and Excel) who ran third in the Listed Wyong Magic Millions 2YO Classic at his only start back in December, and should benefit from having been exposed to quality opposition.

  • Warrnambool Carnival Well Underway

    Wednesday, 1st May 2024
Yesterday's opening day of the traditional 2024 Warrnambool Carnival wasn't the best start for bookmakers with none of the ten race winner sstarting at double figure odds and quite a few short-priced favourites saluting. Starting today and continuing tomorrow, there are two stakes races at the popular venue south-west of Melbourne. The first is Wednesday's Listed Wangoom Handicap (1200m) where consistent Matt Laurie-trained Midtown Boss (Street Boss) is unsuprisingly a warm $4.20 favourite following 10 in-the-frame runs from 11 starts including 9 in the first two. Last start Hareeba Stakes runner-up Nicolini Vito (Nicconi) appears weighted to run a big race off the minimum for Ben, Will & JD Hayes. Gr1 Toorak Handicap hero Tuvalu is the class horse in the race who races well first-up, however carries a big weight. There are plenty of other chances in a wide open race at the 'Bool. See the field below.
