History of Saint Michael's

The Church of Saint Michael the Archangel is one of Australia’s oldest mainland Catholic churches. On 30 September 1840 the Reverend John Polding, first Catholic Bishop of Sydney, laid the foundation stone close to the Wollombi Brook.

The Church today

As it has been for nearly 175 years, the Church of Saint Michael the Archangel is the place of Catholic worship in the heart of the Wollombi Valley. The local community purchased the Church which was sold in 1991.

About Saint Michael's Church, Wollombi, Hunter Valley

The Church of Saint Michael the Archangel is located in Hunter Valley Wine Country in the historic village of Wollombi, 2 hours drive north of Sydney and only 1 ¼ hours from Newcastle and the Central Coast. Built of hand-hewn local sandstone, construction of the church began in 1840, and recent restoration work has uncovered the original decorative interior.

Sold by the Catholic Church in 1991 it is now a private Catholic chapel owned and maintained by the local community, and welcomes Catholic, other Denominational and Civil ceremonies. Ideally situated in the heart of the village, it is the perfect choice for an intimate and memorable wedding in a country setting.

We welcome visitors to the Church which is open most days. Look for the red sign out the front.
