What do I need a permit for?

Can a permit be issued to construct a building on a vacant lot? 

Only if the request has been presented to the Board of Adjustments and they have given permission.

How close can I build to my lot line?

It depends. The City is divided into various districts and the setbacks vary from each district.

How do I get a copy of my accident report?

First call the police department, 872-6424, to ask if the report is complete. If it is, you can stop at the department to pick up a copy. There is no charge.

Where do I pay a parking ticket fine?

Parking ticket fines must be paid at the Broken Bow Police Department. You can bring your ticket and payment to the department or you can mail them in. Please note that the fine due is $5 if paid within 10 days of the date when the ticket was issued, $10 if paid within 11 to 20 days of the date issued and $20 if paid between 21 and 30 days. After 30 days, additional penalties will apply.

What’s the city law on curfew?

The city curfew is 11 p.m. for anyone under the age of 16.

What should I do if my dog is lost?

Report it to the Police Department. If your dog has been picked up and placed in the pound, you can retrieve your dog from the Police Department. There is a $20 pound fee.

How do I obtain a handgun permit?

If you are a resident of the City of Broken Bow, bring a proof of identification to the Police Department, fill out an application and pay a $5 fee. A criminal history will be run. If approved, you will receive your permit, good for three years. Those who live outside of city limits may apply for a permit from the Custer County Sheriff’s Office.

What are your pool hours?

  • Monday thru Friday 12:30 – 5:00, 6:30 – 8:00

What are the library hours?

The library hours are: Monday-Thursday – 10:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m.; Friday – 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.; Saturday – 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. The library is closed on Sundays and City holidays.

How do I get a library card?

After completing an application card anyone may obtain a card at no charge.  An introductory period of six weeks is required for all new patrons and the number of items you can borrow may be limited during that time.

What is the loan period for materials?

Books (with the exception of those on the best sellers’ list) and discovery packs can be borrowed for two weeks. Best sellers, magazines, DVDs, audiobooks and cake pans can be borrowed for one week. Materials may be renewed if they are not on a reserve list for another patron.

Is there an overdue charge?

A fine of 25 cents per day per items is charged for overdue materials. However, every Friday is “fine free” and overdue materials can be returned and the fines waived. Overdue materials can also be renewed on “Fine Free Fridays” without fines accruing. Materials that are overdue more than eight weeks are not eligible for fines being waived on “Fine Free Fridays.”

Does the library have computers for the public to use?

We have five PCs (including one that is ADA) and five laptops just for public use. There is no charge for using our computers and you do not have to be a library patron in order to use the computers. Copies printed from the computers are 10 cents each.

Does the library offer Wi-Fi?

Yes and it is accessible without using a password.

Does the library offer inter-library loan?

Yes. There is a charge of one-way postage for materials received through inter-library loan.

Does the library have a meeting room the public can use?

Yes. If meetings are held during the library’s open hours there is no charge for non-profit, cultural, educational, and community-service groups whose purpose in meeting is to provide information, study or exchange ideas. However, if meetings are held before or after regular library hours, there is a charge of $5.00 per hour. If the room is being used by individuals or groups with commercial concerns, there is a charge of $5.00 per hour during the library’s open hours and $10.00 per hour if the meeting is before or after regular library hours.

Does the library offer programs?

The library offers programs for infants, toddlers, school-age children, teens and adults. You can find out about the weekly/monthly programs and any special events planned at the library by going to the library website.
