About the Presenter
Eli Court, Project Manager, ClimateWorks
Since joining ClimateWorks in May 2012, Eli has managed the stakeholder engagement for two major research projects the City of Melbourne roadmap towards its zero net emissions goal, and the Tracking Progress Towards a Low Carbon Economy project. He co-authored the whole-of-economy National Progress Report in the Tracking Progress series, and supported the development of the five detailed sector reports. Prior to joining ClimateWorks, Eli had extensive experience in developing public policy and working with government, having worked as a lawyer for the Victorian Government Solicitor’s Office and Legal Policy Officer for the Victorian Department of Justice. He also has broad knowledge of energy-related industries and energy policy in Australia and internationally through his role as Energy Policy Advocate at the Moreland Energy Foundation.

Alieta oversees WSAA leadership for opportunities and issues of national significance relating to integrated water cycle management, water security, climate change adaptation, water efficiency, public health and water quality. Alieta also oversees WSAA’s Research Strategy, which includes influencing the national and international research agenda, facilitating collaboration and knowledge sharing between members and the wider research community, and developing processes to encourage innovation and measure research. Alieta manages the WSAA Board’s Healthy Liveable Communities Committee and a number of the WSAA networks.

Lisa Tarry is a recognised sustainability career expert advising recent graduates, career transitioners and experienced sustainability professionals on their journeys into and through the multifaceted sustainability field. She is founder and Managing Director of Turning Green Pty Ltd a career consultancy and recruitment firm in operation since 2008 focused on placing candidates with the skills and experience required to embed sustainability into the core of a business to improve cost efficiencies and drive revenue growth. Lisa has worked in London and Sydney in both a consultancy environment and within corporations managing the talent sourcing requirements for Jones Lang LaSalle, American Express and Caltex. Her academic qualifications include a diploma in Human Resources from the UK, a Cert IV in Carbon Management and a Masters in Business and Technology focused on organisational sustainability and sustainable energy management. She also sits on the Ethical Policy Review Board for EcoDirectory.

The amount of rubbish generated by city dwellers is set to rise steeply in the next two decades, with much of the increase coming in fast-growing cities in developing countries, according to a World Bank report published on Wednesday.
The amount of municipal solid waste is growing fastest in China – which overtook the US as the world’s largest waste generator in 2004 – other parts of east Asia, and parts of eastern Europe and the Middle East, the report says. Growth rates for rubbish in these areas are similar to their rates for urbanisation and increases in GDP.
The report estimates the amount of municipal solid waste will rise from the current 1.3bn tonnes a year to 2.2bn by 2025. The annual cost of solid waste management is projected to rise from $205bn to $375bn, with cost increasing most sharply in poorer countries. The report’s authors point to a looming crisis in waste treatment as living standards rise and urban populations grow.
“Improving solid waste management, especially in the rapidly growing cities of low-income countries, is becoming a more and more urgent issue,” said Rachel Kyte, vice-president of sustainable development at the World Bank. “The findings of this report are sobering, but they also offer hope that once the extent of this issue is recognised, local and national leaders, as well as the international community, will mobilise to put in place programmes to reduce, reuse, recycle, or recover as much waste as possible before burning it (and recovering the energy) or otherwise disposing of it. Measuring the extent of the problem is a critical first step to resolving it.”
The report notes that municipal solid waste management is the most important service a city provides. In poorer countries, rubbish collection and processing is often the largest single budget item for cities, and one of the largest employers.

Sustainable urban development has been a hot topic in the urban planning and construction industry for some time.
There is a growing need and demand for sustainable communities, suburbs and cities in Australia.
The 7th International Urban Design Conference will be held at the Intercontinental, Adelaide from Monday the 1st to Wednesday 3rd of September 2014.

The State of Waste

The webinar presentation will explore the relationship between landfill pricing and recycling and document the key initiatives required over the next decade to drive improved recycling in the MSW, C+I and C+D sectors.
Australia generates 46.8 MT of waste. Despite steady increases in the rate of recovery (av. 52%), the waste generated between 2002/03 and 2008/09 grew by 40%, while population increased by only 10% (SoE Report NSW, 2013).
Recycling is probably the only growth area in the manufacturing sector in Australia. We create nine jobs in recycling for every job in landfill.
About your presenter
Mike Ritchie has over 20 years’ experience in environmental policy and business development. He previously has previously worked for SITA Environmental Solutions, as advisor to the Lord Mayor of Brisbane and Director of Liverpool City Council.
He is past National Vice President and NSW President of WMAA, as well as current Chair of the Carbon Division and AWT Working Group. He is also past director of Environment Business Australia and is a Sessional Commissioner of the Land & Environment Court NSW. Mike has a Masters in Science from Oxford University and an MBA from Sydney University.

The Innovation Awards aim to recognise and showcase individuals and organisations in regional and rural Australia who show innovation in sustainability and the environment.
Who can apply
Representatives from all types of organisations active in regional development across Australia, including councils, shires, rural and regional organisations, NGO’s and government agencies that aim to better serve their communities.

Cameron Little has two decades experience within the environment, sustainability and corporate social responsibility sectors and has been providing pioneering specialist sustainability support for the Australian events industry for the last ten years. In addition to a BSc in Environmental Biology he has trained in Environmental Auditing, Occupational Health and Safety, Workplace Training and Assessment, Sustainability Assessments and Permaculture.
