Lonhro Filly Makes Magic at Weanling Sale

Tara Madgwick - Monday May 26
A Lonhro filly from the family of Golden Slipper winner Forensics has sold for a record price when topping a successful Magic Millions National Weanling Sale on the Gold Coast.

Lonhro filly from True BlondeThe filly, from the stakes winning mare True Blonde, was offered by Segenhoe Stud and was purchased by leading Sydney based bloodstock agent James Harron for $710,000.

There were bids flying from all points of the sale ring before Harron and New Zealand based agent Michael Wallace went bid for bid in a fierce battle to secure the star filly.

The price is the highest paid for a weanling filly at the Magic Millions National Weanling Sale.

"She's a fantastic filly," Harron said. "We're delighted to secure her.

"It's one of the best families in Australia and she's an outstanding physical.

"We're a fan of Lonhro and it's a lovely out cross for later on with breeding."

The result was a huge one for Kevin Maloney's Segenhoe Stud, who have played this weanling market well in the past couple of years.

They have sold this filly for what is essentially a yearling price and last year pinhooked her close relation, a filly by Street Cry (IRE) from Munhro out of this sale for $280,000 and then sold her for $1,050,000 at Inglis Easter.

Foxwedge filly from The Party StandThe progeny of Newgate Farm's exciting first season sire Foxwedge were popular again with his daughter of Group I winner The Party Stand selling for the day's second top price, $350,000.

Offered by Newgate Farm, the filly was purchased by Segenhoe Stud.

Foxwedge also provided the day's third top priced seller, Rothwell Park's filly from Sleepy Hollow to New Zealand's Michael Wallace and Prima Park Bloodstock.

A Group I winning sprinter by Fastnet Rock, Foxwedge was the leading first season sire at this sale by quite a margin with eight youngsters selling at an average $172,500, a spectacular return off a 2012 service fee of $33,000.... especially given these are weanlings, not yearlings.

A colt by Fastnet Rock sold for $220,000 to Musk Creek Farm, while Smart Missile was another first season to shine - he had a filly from Rain Melody sell for $200,000 for Rothwell Park.

Over the two days of the sale no fewer than 34 lots sold at six figure prices, helping boost the sale gross to over $15.2 million - up over 78 per cent on last year's National Weanling Sale.

The average price of $43,559 also climbed over 20 per cent when compared to the $36,042 achieved twelve months ago. The outstanding clearance rate of 87 per cent was on a par with 2013.

"It's been a staggering two days of selling weanlings," Magic Millions Managing Director Vin Cox reported.

"Our gross is up more than 75 per cent and the average by over 20 per cent. This tells us not only is there a robust appetite for weanlings, but the Australian bloodstock industry is extremely healthy."

"The pleasing thing is that it wasn't only about the Teeley Sale. The sale built on the momentum of yesterday."

"We now look forward to three days of select fillies and mares starting on Wednesday," Cox added.

"The catalogue is full of quality from the very first lot on Wednesday to the last lot on Friday, which is the late supplementary entry Solar Charged in foal to Sebring.

"For those that are looking to purchase, I recommend you do your homework and aim high - you might be surprised about what you end up with."
