Development - Blues fest in Belongil next year, then Tyagarah

You will notice how they say "We'll move to that site when everyone is happy. but we assume that only applies to council, not to locals!

THE East Coast Blues and Roots Festival is on the move again.

Yesterday venue manager for the popular annual five-day music event, Brendan Meek, confirmed organisers will be lodging a development application with Byron Shire Council to host next year's festival at Belongil Fields, the site where last weekend's rock concert Splendour In the Grass was held.

Mr Meek said the impending move was due to the Blues Festival having outgrown the football grounds at Red Devil Park.

"We have parted ways with the footy club," Mr Meek said.

"We just outgrew the site. "Red Devil Park is 3.

4 hectares and Belongil Fields is 10.5 hectares, so it's three times the size. At Red Devil Park last year we had 16,000 festival goers, whereas Belongil Fields has just held Splendour In The Grass with 17,500. So we'll have room for an extra 1,500."
It won't be the first time the Blues Fest has been held at Belongil. For its first three years, it was held on the grounds of the old Byron Bay piggery before moving to Belongil Fields for four years.

Red Devil Park has been its home for the past 10 years.

Mr Meek said the return to Belongil, however, would only be an interim measure.

We have purchased land at Tyagarah (300 acres)," he said. "We plan to move there once we have all the boxes ticked and everyone is happy. We don't want to go there half done.

He said it would be great if that move could happen for the festival's 20th anniversary in 2009.

That would be nice," he said. Whether or not that happens, it's not the driving force. We'll move to that site when everyone is happy."

But what if the DA for Belongil is rejected?

"We don't think that will be the case. Weve done our homework and had meetings with council.This was on the Northern Star today ...

Development - Blues Festival has purchased Tyagarah Ti Tree farms

We've heard from multiple sources that Peter Noble has bought the Ti Tree Farm.

We have to assume he isn't just talking about one or even two festivals a year, if that was all they wanted then the site owned by Splendor in Yelgun would have made sense. So its likely still to be regular loud events throughout the year.

Hopefully, it won't be easy - as we all know that site floods, in fact if the festival had been held there in 2006 then it would most likely have had to be evacuated as waters were rising. Whether the site actually flooded is irrelevant, unless Peter Noble is a better predictor of when a potential flood will turn into a real one than the people who lost their vehicles in the big flood a few years ago.

We know there will be traffic impacts, and major noise impacts -people who live in Myocum, Andersons Hill, east and west Tyagarah, Manse Lane, McAuley's Lane are all going to be listening to a melange of multiple stages on many nights of the year, putting up with people camping in their backyards, increased risk of fires and all the other impacts of greatly expanded festivals

According to the Northern Star, Peter Noble is on the hunt for a site for the East Coast Blues and Roots Festival again, "121 acres within 15 mins of Byron Bay". Hopefully he's learned from the flooding during last year's festival how unsuitable his previously chosen site in Tyagarah is. Gray's Lane was waste deep during the festival, which should have been enough to trigger an evacuation of the site!

You have to wonder ... if it was just for the Blue's festival, why the site that Splendour bought near Yelgun is unsuitable, but on the other hand if its for multiple events all year.....

Development - Site in north of shire sold for concerts

This article was on the Northern Star.

It is notable that it is a Splendour linked consortium rather than Blues Fest, as we know they were looking at it. This means the Blue's festival might still be looking for some other place to impose their festival on.

Possible new site for Byron music festivals

BYRON Bay's biggest music festivals could move to the far north of the shire.

Ocean Shores developer Chum Vidgen and a Murwillumbah businessman have sold a vast tract of land, with natural amphitheatre-like areas, to a consortium of 15 people associated with Byron Bay's Splendour in the Grass music festival.

Council and real estate officials say the site is the ideal venue for most of Byron's music gigs, including the annual Blues and Roots festival.

The land stretches across both sides of Jones Road in the very north of Byron Shire towards Wooyung Road on the border of Tweed Shire.

Mr Vidgen confirmed the sale had been settled on Monday but said consortium member Brandon Saul had "the right to make any announcement".

Mr Saul said he was simply one of a consortium of 15 "like-minded" people but declined to elabo- rate on future plans.

Development - Submission made on Far North Coast Strategy

To whom it may concern.

We recently heard from Valerie Thompson at the Total Environment Center that the Department of Planning stated it had only received 60 submissions, on the FNC strategy.

I would like to formally submit on behalf of the Tyagarah Progress Association, also known as the Tyagarah Sustainable Community Alliance, in support of the Total Environment Center's submission on the Far North Coast Strategy.

We have specific concerns that the strategy does not address the significant community planning and support for the environment in the Byron Shire, and is in effect "dumbing down" planning to the lowest level.

We are support of state planning where it sets MINIMUM standards for environmental protection, to prevent the damage that can be done in such a short time by rogue or corrupt councils such as that recently in the Tweed, but believe that local councils could and should be able to set higher standards than any in state plans.

In stead of developers pushing for exemptions to allow development, it should be the other way around, communities should be able to push for exemptions to toughen up the standard and protect our critical coastal environment.

I look forward to hearing that our submission has been received and counted.

Development - Misner behind Tyagarah boarding house?

The developer of the proposed boarding house in Tyagarah has embarked on a charm offensive. Residents of Buckley’s Hill report that he’s talked to almost all of them, describing his plans for the area.

But with talk of fencing off the lakes, 16 cabins already approved, a possible horse riding facility and a proposed boarding house, some residents fear a mini-Becton, housing students instead of tourists, is being planned for the two adjacent sites.
The history behind the site is intriguing. Studio Effects, a company controlled by Sydney-based developer Michael Hunter, in late 2003 purchased the property, covering about 10 acres, for $1.3m. The existing building was then demolished and approval was obtained for a new residence. A besser block ground floor was erected over two years ago but council officers apparently halted further building work.

One local resident said that prior to council officers visiting the site a tarpaulin covered with rubbish was placed over the plumbing in what appeared to be a toilet block. Just this one room featured ?? 10 waste water pipes, apparently in preparation five showers and five toilets, all in a row along one back wall. The residence was either to accommodate a very big family or it wasn’t a typical family residence at all. No one knows whether the council stopped the development because the five-metre boundary had been infringed or whether officers had seen and taken exception to ‘the bathroom’ plumbing.

According to the developer, it’s proposed that the boarding house be used as accommodation for students of the SAE but residents fear Tom Misner has a bigger hand in it than just supplying students. Misner was seen on a number of occasions on the property around the time of the purchase and real estate agents who operate in the area, along with many locals, have long held the belief Misner owned it. Indeed, Tyagarah resident Belinda Fleming once called Misner, believing he owned the land on which the southern tea trea lakes were situated, and asked whether she could swim in them. He gave her his permission.

Residents of Wilson’s Creek, the site of another proposed boarding house in which Tom Misner was believed to be implicated, will be familiar with the modus operandi. Council officers are now considering the development before making their recommendation to councillors.

Other - East Tyagarah picnic a big success

The East Tyagarah picnic on Australia Day was a big success. Organised by Nadia and Belinda, and held on the grass opposite Bodha's place in Preston's Lane, almost everyone from East Tyagarah turned up and some point during the evening. It was a great way to meet the neighbors. Someone supplied a large quantity of water-bombs which kept the kids (and some of the bigger kids!) happy.

Oh - and if anyone has any photos please send them my way.

Other - Plane crash body found?

The body of Will Banks, who was killed along with his son Joel when his ultralight which crashed on 22nd October 2005 may have been found according to the Northern Star on 9th Jan.

The story - which ran in the Herald Sun and the Age said:

Two feared dead in light plane crash

Two men are missing feared dead after an ultralight aircraft crashed on a beach on the NSW north coast.

Witnesses saw the yellow plane crash into water off Tyagarah Beach, near Byron Bay beach, about 12.30pm (AEST), police said.
Westpac Rescue Chopper, Brunswick Surf Club and Byron Bay Surf Club rescuers retrieved debris from the water.

But the two men aboard the aircraft have not been found.

Recreational Aircraft Australia are assisting police with their investigation.

To put this in context. Local pilot Joe Scott and a tourist passenger died in an ultralight crash in March 2003. About 10 years ago the crash of a Cessna killed two and seriously injured two more.

Hi Everyone
We are having a rally on the 2nd December to officially hand over our submission forms to the RTA and Joe Tripodi. This will involve a slow drive from St Helena to Ballina. We are asking all people who wish to take part in this to meet at St Helena Road at 8.30 am for a 9.00 am sharp start. The RTA and Local Councils have been notified and have no objections to this slow drive and we will be having a police escort. Would people driving tractors leave them at St Helena road the night before, ring Geoff Dorey to find out the property where they can be safely left (mobile: 0428 872 172), Otherwise if this is too difficult tractors can meet at points along the way. All unregistered vehicles such as tractors require a conditional permit, ring Geoff Dorey for details. At Ballina the vehicles will turn right into Kerr Street, left into River Street and follow River Street around to Missingham Bridge parking area, where we will take part in the official handing over of submission forms and a bar-b-que. Hi Marianne

I have spoken with the RTA and if anyone who wants to participate with a tractor which is not registered can do so by the following;
Go into the RTA with the make,model and serial numbers for their tractor.
Ask for a permit to move the tractor on a designated day and a specified route.
The cost is only about $29 and a few dollars cheaper if you have your primary producer declaration
Please pass this on to everyone.
