Distribution of SJRLC Equipment and Furniture:

We have acquired a variety of items over the past 24 years. Some would have value on the open market; the majority would not (many people are shutting down offices) but might have great value to you!

SJRLC member libraries will be able to put in a bid or claim starting at 10 AM next Tuesday, June 15.

In the meantime, take a look at what we have and our distribution plan at www.sjrlc.org/office

WE NEED YOUR PROXY (GET ONE AND FAX IT BACK NOW BEFORE YOU FORGET)

Download:

In view of the consolidation of the New Jersey RLCs into one Region (that is not us) and the potential passage of a Governors budget that zero funds our Cooperative, we anticipate ceasing operations at the office on or about August 27, 2010.

We are currently in hurry up and wait mode as we work on options that we cant be pursuing until the budget is passed, one way or another. While we still work for restoration of funds, the situation looks dire and we want to effect a shutdown, if necessary, with the maximum helpfulness, grace, and thanks to you, our much loved members.
Before then, we have a lot of unfinished business:

  • Providing exit strategies and continuation options for a variety of services that you currently need and enjoy. Were working hard on this now and youll be hearing more after the budget passes in July

  • Plan for an orderly cessation of operations at the SJRLC Office. We have acquired a variety of items over the past 24 years. Some would have value on the open market; the majority would not (many people are shutting down offices) but might have great value to you! See our Distribution Plan for details.

  • Plan for a get-together and celebration of our success. Well let you know time and date as soon as we have it.

  • Secure proxies from voting representatives so that we can have the votes necessary to dissolve and avoid the additional expense of continuing as a not-for-profit corporation beyond the time we are able to operate as a Library Cooperative.

  • Not sure if you're the voting rep?
    • For School Libraries: Check the list of School District Voting Reps. There is one voting rep per district.  If you are now in the position of someone currently listed as the voting rep, you are the new voting rep.
    • For all others: The library director is the voting rep.
    • When in doubt, please sign and fax back the proxy.

Does managing gracefully count when we have been consolidated and zero-funded? We think it does and clearly you all think so too. SJRLC is a classy organization and you are a classy group of libraries and individuals. I am proud of us all.

So. Print that PROXY FORM and fax it back to us right now at 856 346-2839!

ADVOCACY UPDATE

For all the latest advocacy updates, resources and talking points see:

THREATS TO NEW JERSEY LIBRARIES

As many of you know, Governor's Christie's budget proposes cuts to the following budget lines: Library Network Aid, Per Capita Library Aid, Virtual Library.  Additionally, the budget proposes moving the State Library under the auspices of Rutgers University, and there is a bill pending (A2555) to eliminate the 1/3 of a mil minimum funding for municipal libraries. For more details on these threats see NJLA's Legislative Alert.

We are working with the library community to develop an advocacy plan to address these threats. As our advocacy efforts develop we will be in touch with SJRLC members through our listserv, webpage, blog, and all channels at our disposal.

For now, here are three things you can do:

  1. Point supporters to this Capwiz Link: http://capwiz.com/ala/nj/home/ and ask them to contact their state reps and the Governor to fight for funding.  Capwiz makes it EASY!!  Also, you can sign up for legislative alerts (and encourage other to do so too) here:
    http://capwiz.com/ala/nj/lmx/u/?jobid=145361623&queueid=4898333736

  2. Encourage your friends, family, and customers who support library service to http://www.ilovenjlibraries.org/ so we can continue building our base of support.

  3. Bookmarks! http://njla.pbworks.com/Library-Champions-Bookmarks and www.bccls.org/buckles/advocacy (thanks to Heidi Cramer for providing)
