EPL 2007-08: Who are Going to be Relegated?

In every domestic league of football playing countries, there are few clubs who take away all the media attention. In English Premier League, the giants like Manchester United, Arsenal, Chelsea and Liverpool are always in the limelight. The media always go for these big four in EPL and the other clubs come into attention only when they get to play against any of these four clubs.

At this moment, in English media, much of the talk is around Manchester United and Chelsea, the two realistic competitors of the title race this season. Both the clubs have two matches left in the season and Manchester United is leading the table only by goal difference. So, it is indeed a hard competition coming up in the next matches of both the clubs.

However, if you could manage to have a look at the bottom of the table, you must find a stiffer competition among four to six clubs who are battling to survive in English Premier League. Except Derby County, it is still unknown who are going to relegate to the Championship this season. Currently, Fulham and Birmingham City fall in the relegation zone with 30 and 32 points respectively. However, there are two matches left for all the clubs this season and anything can happen in the next two matches. In fact, four other clubs stand within a few points of Fulham and Birmingham City. Reading and Bolton Wanderers are just a point above Birmingham City, while Middlesbrough and Wigan Athletics can not relax as they are yet to get over the relegation threat in premier league this season.

Well, you can say that these bottom clubs do not have as many star players as the big four have. You can also claim that they can not play as good as the top four clubs can in EPL. However, what you would find in the next two matches of each of these six clubs is excitement. The players will try their best to show the best possible performance in order to remain in premier league next season. In fact, who does not want to play at premier league?

Fredrik Ljungberg in EURO 2008?

Fredrik Ljungberg has perhaps passed his prime. He is now 30 years old and he is no long in top form he was once. However, this season he has been playing for West Ham United in English premier league and his performance was not bad. He is hopeful that he would be abele to make in to the Sweden squad in EURO 2008. However, he has suffered a bad injury in an EPL match this Saturday against Newcastle United. This injury will perhaps end his season for English premier league this season. However, Fredrik Ljungberg is now hopeful and also determinted that he can become fit very soon and become a part of Swedish squad in EURO 2008. This is a sad story because Fredrik Ljungberg is a talented footballer. In the past, many times he helped his country to win. So, it will be sad matter for Swedish fans not to have Fredrik Ljungberg.

EURO 2008 vs Olympic 2008: Who Will Win?

It seems like a competition. In the same year, UEFA European Championship EURO 2008 and Beijing Olympics 2008 are taking place. In fact, June 2008 will be the month of EURO 2008, while August 2008 will be the month of Beijing Olympics 2008. Both the events are big business for the respective organizations. UEFA and FIFA are behind EURO 2008, while International Olympic Committee (IOC) is behind Olympics 2008. The two events are also the big business for the host countries. Austria and Switzerland are hosting the football event, while China is organizing Olympic 2008. Now, some people are debating in the media that which event will be able to attract more attention in the media and among the sports fans. In this age of satellite tv, both events have become global events indeed. In EURO 2008, only European football teams are taking part. So, it should be limited to European countries. However, because of satellite TV channels, almost all the players taking part in EURO 2008 are known to other continents. For example, there are many fans in Asia who are crazy for European football. So, you can make sure that EURO 2008 will be indeed a global event.

I think that Beijing Olympics will have one problem. The time zone means that many American TV viewers will be sleeping while many events of Beijing Olympics 2008 will take place. This is something that will give EURO 2008 a huge advantage. All the matches will be played in ideal time for Asian, European and Africa regions. Football is not that popular in America but there are some American football fans and even EURO 2008 time and schedule will be ideal for them to enjoy in their tv sets.

EURO 2008 Tickets: Added Security Features

There are only a few weeks left before EURO 2008. Now, UEFA officials are spending very busy time finalizing the preparation. One important thing is the ticket. In the past, we have seen that some tickets are counterfeited and this causes a lot of unhappiness among fans. This time UEFA has taken some strong measures to stop any kind of counterfeiting or forgery of EURO 2008 tickets. One of the important initiatives taken by UEFA is all the tickets will be bar coded. So, this will ensure the ticket can not be counterfeited easily.

David Odonkor in EURO 2008

David Odonkor is not a very famous player in world football today. However, he has been playing football for quite sometime and he played for Germany national football team in 2006 world cup football. He caused lot of surprise because he never played an international football match before. Right now, he is playing for Real Betis and his playing position is winger. He has appeared in 28 games for Real Betis and has not seen any goal so far. I found a news in IHT that David Odonkor may again get the opportunity for German national football team for EURO 2008. German coach Joachim Loew has given this information. Well, it will come to a surprise again for many people in Germany and it may not go too well for the fan. Bjorn Borg Thinks Rafael Nadal to be Tough to Beat at French Open 2008

French Open 2008 will begin on 25 May and defending champion Rafael Nadal has started his French Open preparation pretty successfully after winning the Monte Carlo Masters last week defeating world no 1 Roger Federer in the final. This is the fourth straight title for Nadal on this clay court tournament. The Spaniard did not even lose any set in the final. So, you can realize how much dominance he had in the match over Federer.

Nadal will start French Open 2008 aiming to win the title for the fourth consecutive year, which would see him equal with Björn Borg’s record four consecutive titles in a row in open era. Recently, even Björn Borg himself said that Nadal had the ability to do it.

ESPN reported:

"Nadal looks extremely confident, extremely strong on the clay even right now, so that's definitely the guy to beat for Paris,'' Borg, the last man to win the French Open and Wimbledon back to back, in 1980, told ESPN.com. "If he's as good as he looks right now and is going to continue, and stay away from injuries and be motivated as he is right now, it's going to be tough to beat him at the French.''

Nadal has been winning the French Open title for the last three years in a row. Though Roger Federer dominated in other grand slam tournaments, Nadal has been in dominating form always at Roland Garros. Now, let us see if Rafael Nadal can continue his impressive form in French Open 2008 and win another French Open title.

Donadoni Says, Del Piero Might be in the Italian Squad of EURO 2008

World champions Italy is one of the most favorite for the upcoming EURO 2008 tournament. This is perhaps the most popular tournament after FIFA World Cup in the football world. EURO 2008 kicks off 7th June. Now, football fans are excited with the tournament. Coaches are spending busy time working on their possible final squad for the tournament.

Roberto Donadoni, coach of Italy national football team, has recently indicated that he might bring veteran striker Alessandro Del Piero in the EURO 2008 squad of Italy. Alessandro Del Piero has been in an impressive form so far this season in Italian Serie A with scoring 18 goals for Juventus. The 33 years old striker has won 85 caps for Italy so far and it seems that Roberto Donadoni is impressed with his current form.

AFP reported:

Asked if he would call up Del Piero for the tournament in Austria and Switzerland in June, Donadoni said: "Ten months ago no but now yes.

"The facts speak for themselves but I'll only talk about my squad when the time is right.

"It seems that many people want to create problems for me. There's one thing I'm already certain about, with players such as Del Piero and others, whatever choices I make, they won't cause a fuss."

Del Piero is an experienced player who brought a number of successes for Italy national football team and has been playing pretty successfully for his club Juventus. So, I think, his inclusion in Italian squad for EURO 2008 would simply increase the strength of the squad.

Chelsea is going to host Liverpool in an important Champions League semi final match tomorrow. After the 1-1 first leg draw, the advantage is now on Chelsea. However, you will make you fool yourself, if you do not take Liverpool’s formidable performance in Champions League into account. In fact, Liverpool played in the final of Champions League twice in the last three years. So, Chelsea would not find it easy to break Liverpool, no matter they are playing at home.

Chelsea is also confident too. The Londoners projected a superb victory over Manchester United in EPL this weekend. Chelsea is now equal with Manchester United in English premier league, but Manchester United still holds the top place on goal difference. So, Chelsea has the chance to win double this season. Liverpool, in contrast, is now solely focused on Champions League as the All Reds are off the pace of title race in premiership. Chelsea was lucky enough to have been able to avoid a seemingly inevitable defeat at Liverpool in the first leg. Liverpool conceded an own goal in the closing minutes of the match and thus Chelsea got a valuable away goal too.

18. Manchester United won Champions League title last time in 1998-1999 season and since then, the English club could not yet reach Champions League final. However, they have won four English Premier League titles during this period of time.

19. Barcelona is now on the third place in the point table of La Liga and has no hope to win the title of La Liga this season. So, Champions League is where they can win silverware.

20. Manchester United and Barcelona faced each other on eight occasions before this year, with both sides winning two matches each. The other four matches ended in a draw.

21. Manchester United won three out of their last seven matches in all tournaments. For home matches, Manchester United won eight out of their last ten matches at home in all competitions.

22. For Barcelona, the recent record is now satisfactory as well. They won two and lost one matches out of their last seven matches in all competition. Similarly, their away performance in last ten matches in all competitions is disastrous with losing four and winning only three matches.

23. Sir Alex Ferguson is hopeful about the match and is satisfied with his team’s performance in the first leg.

24. Barcelona manager Frank Rijkaard said that Barcelona would be seen more attacking in the match so that the pressure would be on the host side. Actually, if Barcelona scores an early goal in the match, no doubt, the pressure would totally be on Manchester United, because the hosts then have to score twice to get into the final.

25. Cristiano Ronaldo is currently the highest goal scorer in Champions League this season with seven goals to his\ credit. Lionel Messi is the highest scorer for Barcelona with six goals in Champions League.

Manchester United vs Barcelona: Online Live Score and Update

The second leg semi final match of Champions League 2007-2008 between Manchester United and Barcelona is going to kick off 19:45 BST. The match will take palace at the Old Trafford stadium, the home ground of Manchester United. Now, the match has been the center of attention in the football world. Why?

Well, there are a number of things around the match that are attracting the football fans from around the world. First of all, the match will decide one of the finalists of Champions League this season, as the first leg ended in a goalless draw at Barcelona. So, a victory in the match for either side would ensure a place in the Champions League final, while a draw with any score would favor Barcelona because the Catalan club did not concede any goal in the home leg. If the second leg match also ends up with a scoreless draw, the match will enter into additional time, and then tie breaker, if needed. So, you may think that Manchester United has some advantage in the match because the English giants did not lose the away leg.

However, if you look into the first leg result then you can see that Barcelona perhaps has a bit more advantage in the second leg match. The Spanish club has now tow options to get the ticket of the final. One is, making a draw with any score, except score less and no two is, winning the match by any score. On the other hand, Manchester United has only one option and that is, they have to win the match to reach the final of Champions League for the first time since 1999. Well, it is true that Manchester United will have home advantage in the match and that is a way big advantage than any other advantages for any side.

There are some other points countable to prove how much importance the upcoming Manchester United vs Barcelona match has and the significance of the match. For example, Barcelona has no hope to win anything at home this season. The Catalan Club is now 15 points behind the leader Real Madrid in La Liga with only four matches to go in the season. So, you can see that Champions League is the only realistic chance for Barcelona to win silverware this season. It is apparent that Barcelona would not leave any stone unturned to win the title of Champions League this season. Now, you can guess if there is any other thing more important to Barcelona than winning the title of Champions League.

For Manchester United, the situation is not like that. Manchester United is still leading the English premier league point table with 81 points, but they are ahead of Chelsea on goal difference. There are two more matches in the season and Manchester United is very much in the title race. So, you might think that Manchester United will not be fully focused on Champions league. Well, that is partially true, because winning the premier league title is also very important to Manchester United.

However, Manchester United won the Champions League title last time in 1998-1999 season, and since then, they even could not reach the final of Champions League so far. However, since 1999 Manchester United won four English Premier League titles. So, you can feel that Manchester United players, officials, coaches and fans are now eagerly waiting for another European success. So, Manchester United would not be happy to let the chance go away.

I hope, you could understand how much important the match is. Personally, I am waiting to enjoy this high profile encounter and so are you, I guess. The match will take place at the Old Trafford stadium of Manchester United. So, Manchester United will have home advantage in the match.

Both the managers have indicated attacking football to be seen from their men. The first leg match was ended in a goalless draw. Thus, any score draw would leave the hosts out of the competition, while another goalless show would take the match into additional time. There is so much at stake ahead of this crucial encounter in Champions League.

Manchester United was defensive in the away match at Barcelona, while the Spanish giants dominated the match. However, Manchester United could have got a victory in the first leg, if their in form midfielder Cristiano Ronaldo did not miss the penalty on the third minute of the match. So, it is clear that both sides are now looking forward to win the match to ensure their entrance in the final.

Barcelona does not have any chance to win anything in La Liga this season, as they are currently 15 points behind the leader Real Madrid with four matches to go this season. So, the Catalan club will be focused fully on Champions League and try their best to finish the season with silverware. Manchester United, on other hand, does not have that much liberty at this moment as the Red Devils are still on their way to win the English premier league title.

So, you can see what an important match is waiting there at the Old Trafford stadium today. It is packed with excitement, thrill, anticipations, and a lot more human emotions. It is needless to say that football fans around the world are now eagerly waiting for the kick off. Manchester United vs Barcelona match is now one of the big attractions of the football world. This second leg semi final match of Champions League 20007-2008 has everything to be a classic one. It is needless to say that fans of both sides are now eagerly waiting for this high profile match of Champions League this season. The match will take place at the Old Trafford stadium, the home ground of Manchester United.

With the first leg match ended in a goalless draw, now the upcoming second leg has become the deciding match of UEFA Champions League semi final. With this added importance, there is a lot at stake around the match. I think, many of you are interested to know the television channels which are going to telecast the match live. Today, I searched some about it and found out that Ten Sports television channel is going to telecast this mouth watering clash live for its viewers around the world.

Ten Sports is one of the popular television channels in Asia. Currently, Zee Networks has 50% share of the television channel. Ten Sports mainly covers cricket, football and wrestling and the channel is more popular in the Middle East and South Asia. Ten Sports shows the matches of both UEFA Cup and UEFA Champions League tournaments. Ten Sports television channel is available through Tata Sky, Dish TV and Dialog TV in every part of the world.

Manchester United now needs to win the match in order to get into the final of the competition. Ferguson boys won the tournament last time in 1998-99 season. Since then, Manchester United could not even reach the final of Champions League. This is the tenth time Manchester United progressed to the semi final of Champions Cup/ Champions League, in which the Red Devils reached the final twice and in both occasions they won the title. For Barcelona, they have also won the title twice. Including this year, Barcelona reached the semi final of Champions Cup/ Champions League on ten occasions including the semi final group stage in 1991-92, when they won the tournament for the first time. Barcelona tasted the Champions league title only two seasons ago in 2006. So, they will definitely try their best to replicate their 2006 success in this year as well.

So, you can see that there are a number of things to count around the match. I think, it would be too hard for you to afford to miss the match where the star players like Cristiano Ronaldo, Carlos Tevez, Wayne Rooney, Samuel Eto’o, Lionel Messi are now gearing up to perform for their respective teams. Manchester United needs to win the match, while Barcelona needs a score draw as they did not concede any goal at home. If the match ends up with a goalless draw, then it would go into addition time and tie breaker, if required. So, if you are currently in Asia, then do not forget to tune on Ten Sports television during Manchester United vs Barcelona match.

Manchester United and Barcelona are going to face each other on Tuesday in the second leg semi final match of Champions League. The first leg match ended in a goal less draw at the Nou Camp. The upcoming match will take place at the Old Trafford stadium. So, it is going to be the home match for the English giants.

Match: Manchester United vs Barcelona, second leg semi final of Champions League 2007-08

Venue: Old Trafford

Date: 29 April, Tuesday

Time: 19:45 BST

Live on TV and Radio: BBC Radio Five Live

As the first leg match ended in a goalless draw, it seems that Manchester United has some advantage in the second leg. However, it could go other way round, if the visitors score an early goal in the match, which means Manchester United has to score twice to win the ticket of Champions League final this season. While a goalless draw would take the match into additional time, any score draw would provide Barcelona with the ticket of the final in the competition. So, to some extent, I think, Barcelona also has some advantage in the match thanks to the goal less draw at home in the first leg match.

Weekend Blow

Both Manchester United and Barcelona received a weekend blow and you can not say that they can take inspiration from their defeat in the respective domestic league. Manchester United lost to Chelsea in a tight match, while Barcelona suffered a humiliating 0-2 defeat to Deportivo La Coruna.

Barcelona’s defeat may not have that much impact as Barcelona went into the match with 11 points behind the leaders Real Madrid. Even a victory would not give them any realistic chance to win the title of La Liga this season. At this moment Barcelona is four points behind the third placed Villarreal in the league point table with four matches to go in the season. Finishing the season second in the point table could only be a realistic chance for Barcelona, which would ensure a direct entrance in Champions League next season. Moreover, the Catalan club even does not have any worry to lose the third place in the league. Barcelona failed to win anything this season as they failed to impress in Copa del Rey as well. So, Champions League is now the only competition Barcelona could win silverware this season.

For Manchester United, the 1-2 defeat at Chelsea has had a huge impact. A victory against Chelsea could have ensured premier league title for Manchester United, which is now at stake. It is true that Manchester United is still leading the league point table, but only on goal difference. With two matches yet to go in the season, Manchester United has Chelsea as strong challenger to win the English premier league title.

In the first leg semi final, Barcelona dominated throughout the match. Though Manchester United played defensively, they got a penalty on the third minute of the match that Cristiano Ronaldo missed. From then on, Manchester United could hardly much any chance. For most of the time, ball was in Manchester United half. It looked a bit awkward that Manchester United played defensively, even in the presence of Wayne Rooney and Carlos Tevez. However, reports have it that manager Sir Alex Ferguson wanted his boys defensively in the match. I think, the decision was not good, because a goal less draw away does not give Manchester United any significance advantage in the second leg of the semi final match of Champoins League.

Manchester United vs Barcelona: Head to Head

The two European giants faced each other eight times in the history. Both the clubs won twice with four matches ended in draw. The two sides met each other in 1998-99 Champions League when Manchester United won the Champions League title for the last time. Among the current players of Manchester United, Gary Neville, Ryan Giggs, Paul Scholes and Wes Brown were in the squad of that Champions league winning team. For Barcelona, only Xavi of the current squad was in the 1998-99 Barcelona squad. Manchester United won the Champions league title twice in the history. Barcelona also won the tournament twice, 2006 Champions League title being the last one the Catalan club won.

Recent Performance of Manchester United and Barcelona

Manchester United is at their best at this moment. The club won only on thee occasions out of their last seven outings in all competitions, with the latest defeat and other three matches were drawn. As it is a home match for Manchester United, let us see the recent home record of Manchester United. To be honest, their home record of late is quite satisfactory. Manchester United won eight out of their last ten home matches in all competitions.

For Barcelona, their recent performance is not satisfactory at all. Out of their last seven matches in all competitions, Barcelona won only twice, whole lost in one and other four matches were drawn. Now, let us see their latest performance on the go. Barcelona lost four out of their last ten away matches, while won only three matches and drew other three matches. However, Barcelona has maintained an excellent recored in Champions Leauge. The Catalan side is now on 12 unbeaten streak in the competition.

Manchester United vs Barcelona Champions League: Injury, Disciplinary and Player News

I mentioned earlier that Manchester United played a bit defensive during the first leg match. That was part of the strategy of Sir Alex Ferguson at Barcelona. However, now it is expected that Manchester United show some attacking football at home to receive the ticket of Champions League final. The combination of Wayne Rooney and Carlos Tevez could be lethal for any defense. However, Wayne Rooney is now doubtful for the second leg match against Barcelona due to hip injury sustained during the match against Chelsea. Defender Nemanja Vidic also pulled up with a facial injury in the match. Both of them are doubtful for the second leg semi final against Barcelona. Rooney and Vidic missed training session today. Vidic also missed the first leg against Barcelona because of illness. However, manager Sir Alex Ferguson expects that both of them will be available for the Barcelona encounter.

Times online reported:

"Vidic has got a few stitches under his lip and he’s lost a tooth," he said.

"He was dazed rather than concussed but if we’d waited for him to come round we would have played 10 or 15 minutes with 10 men and you can’t afford that in such a big game. So we took him off."

"Wayne got the same knock as he got last week, straight on the hip bone," he added. "It takes a while for that to clear because, when you get a bang on it, it’s very painful. I’m hopeful he will be all right for Tuesday's match."

However, Rio Ferdinand, Owen Hargreaves, Michael Carrick and Wes Brown are ready to face Barcelona at home. Midfielder Darren Fletcher came back into action against Chelsea after recovering from a knee injury. For Barcelona, there are some good as well as bad news. The Catalan club will miss defender Rafa Márquez due to suspension, while fellow Mexican Giovani Dos Santos is also unavailable as he picked up with a head injury against Deportivo La Coruna. Defender Edmílson is expected to replace Giovani Dos Santos against Manchester United. However, most importantly, Barcelona Captain and experienced defender Carles Puyol is available for the match after missing the first leg match due to suspension. His presence will definitely make the Catalan defense stronger.

Goal.com reported:

Carles Puyol returns to the side after missing the first leg through suspension and he will replace Rafa Márquez who is out after being booked last week. Edmílson has been recalled to the squad in place of young Giovani Dos Santos, who received a blow to the head against Deportivo on Saturday.

Gaby Milito, and Andrés Iniesta will also be back in the squad after missing the La Liga match against Deportivo La Coruna due to suspension. Leonel Messi, Xavi and Samuel Eto'o were rested for the Premira Division match and it is needless to say that Frank Frank Rijkaard will be happy to see them at their best at Old Trafford. Long term absentee Ronaldinho along with second goal keeper Albert Jorquera remain sidelined with injury. Oleguer and Santi Ezquerro have not been named for the 18 men squad of this match. Though midfielder Yaya Toure received a knock to his ankle against Deportivo La Coruna, he will travel to Manchester United with the Catalan side.

Manchester United vs Barcelona: What Managers Say

You might be interested to know what the managers of both sides are thinking ahead of the mouth watering clash. Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson said that at home, his side would be different to the first game. However, it is not clear if he meant it aggressive football by saying ‘different to the first game’. I mentioned earlier that Manchester United defensively, which does not go with their attacking nature of football in the presence of Cristiano Ronaldo, Wayne Rooney and Carlos Tevez. Moreover, Ferguson also felt happy for not giving too many chances to Barcelona in the first leg match.

Earth Times reported:

"We sealed off the areas where teams don't normally do well against Barcelona," he said. "They had a lot of play around the box but our concentration was very good...They didn't make a lot of chances."

Ferguson is confident that star striker Wayne Rooney will be fit after being substituted in Saturday's 2-1 defeat away to Chelsea.

"Rooney had a bang on the hip," Ferguson said on Sunday.

"It is very, very painful but hopefully he will be all right for Tuesday. Wayne's a team player who sacrifices himself all the time."

Frank Rijkaard insists his players to play aggressive football at Manchester United in order to put the pressure on the host team. The Dutch manager said Barcelona had always maintained their own style of football. He added that on Tuesday, Barcelona would be seen more attacking than what they were at home. The Catalan manager thinks that becoming aggressive and putting the pressure on Manchester United are the keys to this match.

Sportinglife reported:

"But against Manchester United we have to play strong. To defend is not the correct course of action in this case. We have to play with aggression and by putting them under pressure."

"It is a difficult ground and a strong team, but I think that we can get through,"

"On Tuesday I am sure they will come out more to attack than at the Nou Camp and we must take advantage of our chances. The keys to the tie? To be aggressive and put them under a lot of pressure so as to make life difficult for them.

"To defend the result is not our style. We need to worry only about our play."

So, I think, an exciting match is waiting there at the Old Trafford on Tuesday. Both teams are now looking to play attacking football in the deciding match. Defenders as well as the forwards of both sides have to spend a busy time in the match.

Now, the question comes here is that who are going to get into the final of Champions League this season. Well, that is a million dollar question. Manchester United will have home advantage, while an early goal for Barcelona would require Manchester United scoring two goals. Given the fact that both teams are expected to play attacking football, I think, anything could happen in the match. If Barcelona defense performs well, then Rooney, Tevez, Ronaldo would find their task difficult. On the other hand, Barcelona forwards have to be at their best to break the Manchester United defense. Both the sides have some attacking forwards who could be decisive for the opponent defense. So, I see a classic match waiting there at the Old Trafford on Tuesday. Anything can happen and both the sides, I think, have enough chances to receive the ticket of the final of Champions League. To be honest, the match is too big to make a prediction.
