Freddy Kempf enjoys a reputation as an explosive and physical performer but also as a highly sensitive artist. This new disc presents three central works from the great virtuoso literature for solo piano. Mussorgsky's Pictures from an Exhibition was composed in 1874 in a creative frenzy following the death of his friend, the painter and architect Viktor Hartmann. Balakirev’s Islamey was composed five years earlier, and is based on ‘Islamey’, a melody from north Caucasia, and a Tatar melody from the Crimea. It was long regarded as the most difficult work in the entire piano repertory, and in fact, when Ravel 1908 composed Gaspard de la Nuit, he specifically wanted to write something that would be even more virtuosic.

Although the Jews had been banished from England in 1290, the Italian-Jewish Bassano and Lupo families dominated music at the Tudor and Stuart courts between 1550 and 1650. Herbert von Karajan was the first conductor who was obsessed with the filming of his musical performances in order to preserve them as cultural heritage. An aesthete, a perfectionist, and a true pioneer, he once said 'Actually, I should have been born in a later era.' Television engineering was still in the fledgling stages when Karajan started. Still, his visual approach and rigid rules on how to film an orchestra and soloists - and of course how to present himself as a conductor – still have an impact today on concert and opera recordings for the screen. No wonder that Karajan demanded a great deal of his entire film crew, with simmering tensions often coming to head. A star cast is accompanied by the Chorus and Orchestra della Piccola Scala di Milano conducted by Antonino Votto.
