Kscope Online evaluation

Client: Department of Education and Training, Victoria

Subject: Career guidance information in schools

Major achievement: A detailed evaluation of several online career guidance tools available to Victorian schools, with advice about how such resources can be used in schools

The project: An increasing number of online career guidance tools are available on the internet, and the department wanted one evaluated (and compared to another) to further understand the potential for online career education in Victorian schools.

We designed four interlocking questionnaires, one for teachers and one for students for both websites, to capture the data required. Results from teachers and 75 students from eleven schools gained a wealth of information about what students and teachers want in educational websites: sites with short, simple log-on requirements; language, literacy and numeracy that matches students' abilities; 'tick-box' questionnaires that offer insight; options for possible jobs and careers; suggestions for courses that will lead to favoured careers; and practical tips about how to get a job. They want to find and use these features quickly and easily.

Overall, the evaluation found that websites are just tools in a structured career guidance program, not programs in themselves; and need to be used with other resources to be most effective.
