The concrete driveway in front of Betty's Bikes and Buns coffee shop in southeast Minneapolis is filled with men in leather jackets, their motorcycles glittering with chrome.

The gathering looks a lot like a small rally, but it's fueled by conversation and caffeine, not gasoline and competition.

People on foot or bicycle are welcome to join in, as long as they're willing to listen to the regulars brag a bit, complain a bit, and talk -- a lot -- about motorcycles.

"We're the Switzerland of the motorcycle world," says Tom Roe, Betty's owner, as he surveys the eclectic crowd. His coffee shop and biker haven was once a gas station.

Linda Back McKay of Minneapolis rides a 1998 Harley Low Rider Convertible. "You go to meet people with similar interests without the alcohol," she said. "It's biker church."

Custom bikes and choppers are scattered through the parking lot. Contrary to traditional motorcycle culture, there is no pecking order here based on what you ride or how long you have ridden. "People check their attitudes at the door," says Mike Weston of Minneapolis. For Weston, who rides what he terms "a Yamaha-based home-built special," that lack of attitude is precisely why he enjoys Betty's.

Betty's, and Bob's Java Hut in Uptown Minneapolis, are among a growing number of coffee shops that are welcome alternatives for older riders who used to meet in bars. They appeal to a new generation of riders, too, who are too young to remember when Minneapolis biker culture was defined by rows of Harleys parked along Cedar Avenue in Minneapolis' West Bank district every Saturday night.

Al Greycat, a founding member of the Minnesota chapter of El Forastero Motorcycle Club, and a compatriot of the late Easy Rider magazine artist Dave Mann, grew up in Minneapolis and remembers when bars were the only place motorcyclists were welcome. Greycat says he likes places like Betty's because "anything and anyplace related to motorcycles is good."

Everything at Betty's is related to motorcycles, from the racing bikes and scooters suspended from the ceiling to the extensive library of motorcycle publications in racks and on tables. Bulletin boards are layered with motorcycle-related events.

Tom Jones of Brooklyn Park rode his Harley Sportster to Betty's for solid bike banter. "I don't want to talk about the Vikings. I don't want to talk about the Twins. I want to talk about motorcycles," he says.

Dulano's Pizza on Lake Street in Minneapolis draws throngs of bikers and onlookers in summer. On the first Thursday of every month, hundreds of bikers converge at Dulano's, closing down side streets as people show off their motorcycles, scooters and homemade motorized vehicles that defy categorization.

Vintage bikes

Steve Hamel, owner of Sterling Cycle Works in St. Paul, is one of the inadvertent founders of First Thursday. The event began when members of the Norton Owners Club, a British vintage motorcycle group, held their monthly meetings at Dulano's. Motorcyclists cruising Lake Street saw the collection of vintage motorcycles outside the restaurant and stopped to admire them. Their numbers grew.

The club has since changed its meeting night to the third Thursday of each month, because the crush of people makes it impossible to conduct a meeting and social event, but Hamel is pleased that such a variety of riders continue to meet on common ground.

The supportive culture, which includes a cable access television program and restaurants that welcome group meetings, has enticed a good number of women and families to participate. On Sundays, Marty Hauge of Minnetonka takes his wife and 15-month-old daughter to Betty's. "It's nice to bring your wife and child to a motorcycle place and not be scorned for it," he says.

Like First Thursday, Bob's Java Hut opened with the intent of providing a meeting place for owners of vintage motorcycles. But it, too, soon drew a far wider cross section of bikers.

Gold Wings

James Newman, a server at Bob's and a law student at William Mitchell College of Law, started riding in his 20s. He currently rides an Aprilia Mille R. "One buys an Italian sports bike when one is single," he says. Newman plans to ride well into his retirement years, becoming part of the flock of Gold Wings, the massive Honda road bikes built for two riders and favored by older couples. "Then I can buy matching outfits for my spouse and myself and have helmets with huge microphones in them so I can talk to my wife," he said with a laugh.

Riding is an integral part of life for Dave Walz of Minneapolis, too. When Walz starts a ride on his Yamaha Warrior, he says, "It's 15 minutes of, 'Yeah, let's ride,' then 15 minutes of worrying about bills and everyday stuff, then 15 minutes of reaching the point of being there, seeing the scenery, and being free." At the end of a ride, Walz heads to Betty's. "Yes, the coffee is good," he says," but the reason I'm here is this slab of cement out front, it's the people, it's the familiar faces, it's the 'Where have you been?' and the 'Where do you ride?' It's the camaraderie."

From Downtown Mpls take the Hennepin Ave Bridge follow that about 5 blocks until you see the Holiday and White Castle on the left, then you'll see Betty's on the right.
