SAHorseracing.COM is proud to announce that we will be in Singapore, courtesy of title sponsor Longines, to cover the Longines Singapore Gold Cup on 11 November 2012.
The Longines Singapore Gold Cup is one of the richest and most illustrious events on the Singapore racing calendar, with a history that dates back to 18 October 1924.
The inaugural race, which was run at Farrer Park racecourse, saw Thelasocrete take the honours and bag (at the time) the substantial prizemoney of $1,600. The time-honoured handicap race is run over 2,200 metres and is rightly considered as Singapore's premier staying event.
In Singapore Gold Cup history, multiple-champion trainer Ivan Allan holds the record for the most number of successes, having saddled the winner on five occasions while owner Jerry Sung, of Auric Stable, has also won the Cup a similar number of times.
Another Singapore Gold Cup record was equalled in 2011. Three Rings, owned by Tan Eng Joo, won the Cup an unprecedented three times in 1954, 1956, 1957, until the feat was matched by owner Masa Otani, trainer Hideyuki Takaoka and jockey Ronnie Stewart when the Japanese-bred El Dorado won the Singapore Gold Cup for the third time on 13 November 2011, after scoring back-to-back victories in 2008 and 2009.
The Group 1 race was sponsored for the first time by famous Swiss watchmaker Longines in 2010.
With prizemoney now standing at $1.35 million, the Singapore Gold Cup is the third leg of the Singapore Triple Crown Series which takes in earlier legs of the Kranji Mile and Raffles Cup run during October.
