Refrigeration

TIP: All refrigeration will require adjustment during different seasons. In the winter you may have to adjust the fridge/freezer to a warmer setting. And in the summer adjust it to a cooler temperature. The environment of the machine will determine how often the machine thermostat requires adjustment. If the machine is located by a window causing the sun to shine on it or next to a stove or near a heater.
TIP: To make the machine run efficiently and keep your electricity bill down and stopping the compressor (Motor) turning on to often, follow these hints.
1) Make sure the door seals are not torn or pulled and the door shuts correctly
2) If the fridge is not full, try filling empty plastic bottles full of water and placing them on the shelves, this will keep the temperature down inside the fridge and it will not turn the compressor on as often. At same time you have cold water to drink.
3) Freezers: Again if the freezer is not full. Use the empty bottles full of water. These will freeze and keep the temperature down in the compartment. DO NOT! fill the bottles all the way to the top, as when they fill they will burst! For large chest freezers that can’t be kept full, try using boxes full of newspapers, this again will help to keep the temperature down.
4) All Fridge/Freezers requires a good airflow inside the compartment. So keep your food etc away from the back wall of the compartment. This will maintain a good air flow.
Bar Fridge Faults
REMEMBER: This type of fridge have a small freezer box in the top or to one side of the machine. The machine is only there to make ice. A lot of people try to fill the compartment with food. Make sure it is not completely full as it will stop the air flow of the machine. Also check that your food is actually completely frozen! This can of course cause health issues if it is not. The best option is use it to freeze ice or 1 or 2 items to be frozen in it.
FAULT: The fridge is not getting cold enough
TRY: Is there a build up of ice on the freezer box ? If so it requires defrosting. Most bar fridges (if not all) are not self defrosting. You have to manually defrost them. The best way to do this is to switch the machine off at the wall socket and leave the door open for 24hours. Put a large container underneath theice box to catch the water. To keep on top of it and stop the fridge not working correctly in the future, defrost the fridge when there is a thin build up of ice on the freezer box. In the summer you will have to do this more often. Some bar fridges may have a off position on the thermostat or a grey push button in the middle of the control knob that you press in. The grey button type will turn itself back on when it has defrosted. Any other faults please place a call with the Real Estate office or contact us.
Larder Fridges
TIP: This is the type without a freezer box. This type comes with or without self defrosting. If the fridge stops working efficiently and the metal plate on the back (Evaporator) becomes iced up. Defrost it by turning it off for 24hours and leaving the door open. Any other faults please place a call with the Real Estate office or contact us.
Fridge Freezers
REMEMBER: All of these are self defrosting. Most machines now work on the same principal (But not all!) This we will explain so when it comes to the “fault” section below you will understand why we ask about checking the freezer to cure a fridge problem. The freezer compartment produces the cold air from the evaporator. The freezer then pumps the air down to the fridge through a vent, using a fan located at the back wall of the freezer compartment.
FAULT: Fridge is not getting cold
TRY: Check the fridge compartment thermostat is turned to it’s coldest setting. Check that the freezer compartment has not got a floor of ice built up on it. If it has then a manual defrost is required (Turn machine off for 24hrs with both door open) Once it is done then sponge up the water in the freezer. Clean all food debris that has built up at the back floor of the freezer. This may be causing the defrost channel (small hole where the water when the freezer defrosts runs into to escape) to become blocked. Then switch the machine back on. If after a week or so more water builds up on the freezer floor, report it to your Real Estate office or contact us
FAULT: Water gathers on the fridge floor
TRY: Check to see the defrost channel is not blocked. This is located on the back wall of the fridge and is ‘V’ shaped. There is a hole in the middle, try pouring a little water down it. If it backs up, pour a little hot water down it. If this doesn’t help carefully poke a wooden skewer down the hole to clear the blockage. If this doesn’t cure it and for all over faults please report it to your Real Estate office or contact us.
