 Project Management in the Real World  2 days
  • The course takes the theories of project management and shows how to apply these concepts in real world project situations through the application of proven tools and examples.
  • It is designed to teach the elements of project management through practical exercises and scenario based learning.
  • The course covers the practical tools and processes that support effective project management.
 Scope, Plan and Schedule projects  1 day

The course covers the theory and then practical exercises based on the client's business. The following components are covered:

    • Defining and scoping the project
    • Developing a hierarchy of products
    • Representing the sequence of products against time
    • Defining the individual products
    • Linking planning to schedules
    • Defining activities, dependencies and resources in schedules.
 Business Cases  1/2 day

This workshop covers the reasons for business cases, writing effective business cases, the key elements of a good business case and the linkages between a business case and the project stages.

 Quality and Configuration

 1/2 day

This workshop explores the principles and then the practical application of quality and configuration concepts. It shows how to link these techniques throughout all project processes to ensure their true benefits are obtained.

 Project Governance

 1/2 day

These sessions examine the purpose of governance and controls in the project environment and the roles of boards in projects.

 Risks, Issues and Change Control  1/2 day
  • The assessment of likelihood and consequence, level of risk, prioritisation and development of mitigation strategies are covered in this practical workshop based on the principles of the Australian standard
  • The linkages between risks, issues and change control are explored and reviewed in exercises

 MS Project*

 1 day
  •  The planning aspects of a project linked to scheduling.
  • Practical, exercise based course with a half day on the basics of operation followed by a half day of the more complex elements that will provide the best outcomes for course attendees.

  Practical Program Management

 2 days
  • The design and planning of a program of work.
  • Managing a program towards a single vision and the designated benefits.
  • Making the linkages between project and program operations.
  • Reporting, monitoring and controlling the program.
  • Closing a program.
 Executive Briefings  As required

Executive briefings are designed around the needs of the organisation, to suit the particular information requirements of the management groups.

The approach

All courses and workshops are scenario and practice based. The materials and coverage are customised where required to suit the specific organisation with references to relevant templates, processes and standards.
 

The facilitator, Paul Purdon,  has:

  • Extensive practical project management experience over 20 years
  • Certification in the project and program methodologies prescribed by the Queensland Government
  • Implemented a full project/program methodology into an organisation where it has been used highly successfully across hundreds of projects
  • Run numerous successful practical project and program management training courses
  • Regularly presented to national and international conferences of the Australian Institute of Project Management
  • 14 years experience as a TAFE teacher in systems development and project management and previously Head of Faculty of a large TAFE college.
