Paul Lucas

The Artist

Lucas was born in Derbyshire, England in 1955 and moved to Australia with his family in 1963.

Inspired by the vivid Australian landscape and artists of the Romantic Movement, such as Turner and Constable, Lucas devoted himself to nurturing and realising his talent for rich and dramatic depictions of local landmarks. His unique vision and subtle interpretations have won many admirers, as well as formal accolades.

Lucas’ current muse is the ocean, particularly the areas surrounding the Abrolhos Islands, a ‘subject’ he became fascinated with after working for many years on Cray boats.  His love of and respect for the ocean is evident in his work and his latest canvases capture in spectacular detail and colour the ephemeral moods and subtleties of the water and horizon, combining superb detail with an extraordinary use of colour and light. Lucas has a gift for truthfully observing environments whilst elevating mundane details; in his vision the utilitarian becomes sublime.

Lucas is now extending his vision to the lakes of Perth, intent on capturing the natural beauty of the waterways in the context of the City itself.

Having exhibited in South Africa, Canada, Rhodesia, and Australia, Lucas’ work can currently be found directly through this website or private viewings at his South Perth home studio, upon request.

Commissions

Paul has not always painted the beautiful blues and greens of the Abrolhos Islands. His journey as an artist began using a very different pallet - the many rich green and golds of the Australian landscape. From the tall timber forests of the Southwest to the intense reds and browns of the Pilbara and the Central West. Loving the art of creating illusion on canvas, Paul recently created a series of canvases simulating various walls. From rendered, to brickwork, to wallpaper and old cracked plaster. Each work depicts antique objects hanging off these walls. Wanting to take this illusionary concept a step further, Paul proceeded to paint picture frames around the edge of each canvas whereby adding to the realism.

Paul is constantly seeking out new challenges he can pursue on his journey as an artist and is currently inviting commissions. If you are interested in a custom-made piece, please get in touch.

Watch Paul Talk About The Batavia

The 'Batavia Aground' trilogy depicts the time line of events leading up to and including that tragic day at the Abrolhos Islands in 1629. The ‘First Light’ kicks off the trilogy with the ship shown at sunrise and them realising their grave situation.

The three works have been sold to private collectors and we now offer ‘Limited Edition’ canvas prints of the original series so all can still own your piece of Western Australian history.
