Homestead History

Happy Valley Homestead is located 7km south east of Donnybrook in the Upper Capel region at the end of Goldfields Road.

The original Homestead was built at Happy Valley in 1939 as the farmhouse for James (Jim) & Bernice Jarvis. The Homestead was constructed of timber from two small mill cottages to accommodate their six children.

The Jarvis family then established a small dairy and piggery with timber cleared from the valley. These timber buildings are still standing among a mix of a large established Morton Bay fig, Plane trees and Eucalyptus. The Homestead garden features some of the original fruit trees in the surrounding yard that still produce fruit today.

Happy Valley Today

The late Henry Jarvis, youngest son of James & Bernice, rebuilt back on the family farm with his wife Alice “Joy” in 1971. They established 200ha of grazing pastures for beef cattle, a 12ha fruit orchard and fruit packing facilities trading as Twin Apple Packhouse, while raising their three children. Their son Jason has since returned to the family farm after studying for his Horticultural Management Degree in Christchurch, New Zealand.

Jason lives on the farm with his wife Fiona & three children. He manages the 12ha commercial Certified Organic (AUS-QUAL) Apple orchard with free-ranging chickens in the valley. Together, with his mother Joy, they maintain fruit & egg packing facilities on the farm to supply local organic markets; trading as Prime Organics www.primeorganics.com.au  All surrounded by 50ha of native bush with an abundance of birds and wildlife.

Many apple varieties are grown here from the old Granny Smith to the popular Pink Lady and Royal Gala. The different apple varieties are picked in Autumn from February until June. Seasonal volunteer workers are accommodated on the farm during harvest and local staff help pack the fresh produce grown. Jason maintains a small herd of organic beef cattle at Happy Valley which are free ranging on the farms organic pastures seasonally and sold to the local Organic & Biodynamic Meats WA Co-op www.organicmeats.com.au
