Pain Management Counselling
Pain Management Counselling is an individually tailored program developed according to your particular pain condition. Issues such as the type of injury, extent of the pain and the impact of the pain on your lifestyle are taken into account when formulating your Pain Management Plan.
The goal of Pain Management Counselling is to assist you to achieve a fulfilling life despite the presence of persistent pain. Other associated conditions you may experience such as depression, anxiety, adjustment disorders and relationship pressures are also explored.
During counselling, emphasis is placed on learning how to pace yourself and set goals, with the intention of helping you improve your quality of life and increase your range of activities and challenges.
Cognitive and behavioural strategies are also used to assist you with emotional ups and downs and feelings of helplessness and hopelessness.
Neurofeedback
Neurofeedback (also known as EEG Biofeedback) is a computer based technology that presents individuals with feedback on their brainwave activity. Brainwave activity is measured using one-way sensors placed on the scalp and processed through computer software. It involves direct training of brain function, teaching the brain to function more efficiently.
Often, we become drawn to, or stuck in undesirable states of being (for example distraction, dissociation, anxiety or depression) and may find it difficult to shift from this focus to another, of lift ourselves out of this uncomfortable state. Studies have revealed that the brain is able to continually learn and change, and can be “trained” by rewarding optimal activity and inhibiting the less desirable.
Neurofeedback can help you with peak-performance training, and can also treat a wide range of conditions from learning difficulties, ADD/ADHD in children and adults and ongoing sleep disturbance to emotional issues, severe mood swings, stress and chronic pain.

Cognitive-Behavioural Therapy (CBT)
CBT represents a systematic approach aimed at examining and influencing the relationship between your thoughts, feelings and behaviours. It is founded on the notion that by using certain techniques we can change our patterns of thought, leading to shifts in our feelings and actions.
Research has shown that CBT can be useful in managing the symptoms of depression, anxiety, eating disorders, substance abuse, post-traumatic stress disorder and obsessive compulsive disorder.
Eye Movement Desensitisation Reprocessing (EMDR)
EMDR is a structured type of psychotherapy that was developed to address the symptoms of disturbing and traumatic life experiences.
EMDR has been shown to be useful in cases of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), where a person has experienced a traumatic event and continues to experience distressing symptoms.
When a person is extremely upset, for example following a trauma or while suffering from chronic pain, their brain is not as able to process information as effectively as it would normally. Distressing feelings and memories may be experienced repeatedly without seeming to get any better.
EMDR can help with the processing of distressing memories and emotions by improving the brain's ability to process information. It is thought that eye movement (similar to that experienced during REM sleep) can stimulate brain activity associated with information processing, allowing memories and feelings to be processed and experienced in a less distressing way.
