History of OzInd Golf Club

The OzInd Golf Club owes its origin entirely to the enthusiasm and determination of a small handful of players. On completion of the training and gala arranged from grant funding to Indian Society of WA (Inc) by the Department of Sports and Recreation in 2008, Atul Garg suggested that the momentum of golf playing needs to be continued. Some other players were equally convinced that by continuation of regular golf games they could further improve on the training acquired by them.

On 9 November 2008 four players namely Atul Garg, Vitus D’Cunha, Sanjeev Saraf and Shakir Nagree played their first game at Whaleback Golf Course as a committed group. With no fixed golf course, they continued to play at Whaleback, Maylands Peninsula, Fremantle and Point Walter Golf Courses. Atul Garg undertook the task of coordinating, making game bookings and communicating with all players. Seeing the enthusiasm these players, the next bunch of players to join the group were Alpesh Shah, Navin Jain, Rakesh Khandelwal and Bhupinder Singh in December 2008. Since then the group has grown consistently.

Several informal meetings were held after the games to discuss the future direction and to increase and encourage broader participation. The group continued to play enthusiastically but informally till 12 April 2009 when it was decided to formally start a club. After some discussion, the name OzInd Golf Club was agreed by all and a token membership fee of $25 was introduced. The launch of a new golf club was warmly received as more players joined the group. The contribution of the small membership fee gave a magnificent start to the essential needs of the club. At this stage Alpesh Shah developed the following logo of the Club, which was accepted by all.

The group discussed and agreed to develop own merchandise and once again Alpesh Shah volunteered to get a logo block made and bring some T shirt samples. The members made a choice of the T shirt material and selected their sizes. Alpesh Shah got the first lot of T shirts made at $33 per piece and after some wait the members were delighted to receive their new T shirts with club logo in June 2009. In the meantime Atul Garg continued to coordinate the golf games, record golf scores, keep all accounts and encourage new players to join the Club. Atul Garg and Alpesh Shah developed publicity flyers for email distribution, community Notice Boards and websites. The response was unbelievable as more and more members started joining the club. The first family barbeque was held at Point Walter Reserve on 2 August 2009.

Over a period of time Point Walter Golf Course became the ‘home’ golf course of Ozind Golf Club as we developed good relations with the staff. The members continued to hold discussions after each game and it was decided to play once a month (on 3rd Sunday) away from Point Walter as an ‘adventure game’ to ensure that the players get to enjoy as many as possible different golf courses in Perth. In addition to the previous Whaleback, Maylands, Fremantle and Point Walter public golf courses; the group also enjoyed playing at Hamersley, Marangaroo, Glen Iris, Hillview, Collier Park and Burswood public golf courses.

On 30 August 2009 the members felt the need to develop a Constitution for the Club and entrusted Atul Garg with the task. On 2 September 2009 Atul Garg circulated the first copy of the Constitution. Several members provided their inputs and after 7 iterations the final version was agreed. In addition to playing golf, the Constitution provides for social, cultural and community activities, and supporting needy community members and registered charities.

On 28 September 2009 first Club handicaps were calculated and circulated. On 11 October 2009 the Club had its first formal meeting when a Management Committee took over the affairs with Atul Garg (President), Errol Ma’har (Vice President), Rakesh Khandelwal (Secretary), Binod Agarwalla (Treasurer); and Clement Xavier, Sanjeev Saraf and Alpesh Shah as Committee Members. Later Jay Sundaresan also joined as Committee Member. Vitus D’Cunha, Gavin Soorma, Shakir Nagree and Shammas Ebrahim were coopted to assist the Management Committee during the formative period of the Club.

On 23 October 2009 the Club members enjoyed a dinner at Annalakshmi hosted by the Her Excellency Mrs Sujatha Singh, High Commissioner and on 31/12/2009 the Club joined hands with the Cinnamon Club Applecross restaurant to organise the Charity New Year Eve Dinner Dance to raise $3,000 for the Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia. The event was very successful and a cheque of $3,000 was donated to the Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia.

At the time of writing this history on 27 January 2010, there are 33 paid members and several informal players of the Club.
