Grants

It often surprises my business clients just how many government grant programs exist in Australia. Grants can range from a few thousand dollars (to produce a business plan, for example) to several million dollars.

Many of the grant programs are available for innovative start-up businesses. There are local council grants covering almost everything from encouraging relocation, training, right through to environmental programs. State government offers many larger programs including business planning and coaching. The federal government has some very large programs particularly for innovation, employment and export.

Most grants are competitive, meaning that your business will compete against other businesses for grant funding. There are many non-competitive grants available such as the Export Market Development Grant offered by the federal government, which will pay up to 50% of export marketing costs.
