Mirage Air was created in 1990 as a result of the flying frustrations of its founding Managing Director Ian MacDonald. Ian graduated Bjuris 1971, LLB 1972 at Monash. He pursued an active traditional business career until 1990. He now owns and pleasurably operates a charter business out of Moorabbin Airport, Victoria Australia. In addition Mirage Air has a training program to teach disabled enthusiasts to fly single-engined aircraft.

A unique feature of some Mirage aircraft is that they have been configured to be flown with hand controls only. The owner, Ian MacDonald, is a passionate pilot that has a disablilty caused by a gunshot wound as young man. He always wanted to fly and with the assistance of other disabled pilots has sourced hand controls for single engine aircraft from the United States.

Ian flies two single engine aircraft and more recently received his endorsement on the Aerocommander utilising these specially designed hand controls. Ian recognises the support given by the Bing Molyneax and Bob Muir Turbo Aero Maintenance for their assistance with the hand control mechanism on the Shrike.
