Polk Momo MMC6500???

if you don't mind peoples opinions from other cars there is a really informative and helpful group of guys over in the main forums car/audio section i am sure they would have some input on these speakers...

I listened to them....there not to my liking. But i found the Infiniti 6812CF to be about the best i have found. I listen for an even blend from top to bottom. Most car speakers have this huge hole in the middle of the frequency range with this awefull sizzling crappy thing on the top end. I really dislike most car stereo stuff.

I shopped Best buy and Circuit city and found the Infinity speakers to be the pair i disliked the least. the top is a little sizzly on the very top but from about 8K down to about 50hz there is no noticable suck out in the middle.

And i didnt think there would be much difference in the bass between a 5x7/6x8 and a 6.5" set but boy was i wrong! the 5by sets really did have more bass.

And BTW, the pioneer speakers.....not even waste your time. All the models i listened to were horrid.

should check out tweeter if you are shopping at the bigger stereo stores they usually have some nicer stuff then bestbuy and circuit city, those stores are more towards people that just want something a bit better then stock or a lot of low end not really audio phile type speakers...

i am running the boston Z series 6.5 and am very happy with them... if you are not going to run a sub woofer then the bigger cone (5x7-6x8) will generally net you more bass... give a listen to some focals, jl audio, alpine, or the boston accoustics and see if the oval speakers are what you are looking for... see if you have any mom and pop stereo stores in your area or a tweeter they will have the brands i listed...

The difference between entry to mid level 6.5 and 6x8 speakers is very little so if the speaker you like comes in a 6x8 version you might as well get it to save on installation time. However, if you are looking at speakers that come only in 6.5 then obviously you will have to build a baffle to mount them in the 6x8 hole.

Everyone's ears are different and depending on the music you listen to and how loud you listen to it you are going to like different speakers than someone else. The best thing for you to do is to go to a bunch of stores with a mix CD of your favorite songs and demo the speakers one at a time. Take notes if you have to. Keep track of pricing also because you may like something that is out of your budget or you may find that more expensive speakers don't sound much better than cheaper ones with the music you like.

Thanks guys. I am a professional audio systems designer by day and a recording engineer and audio repair tech by night. It had just been a while since i shopped for car audio speakers.

zero

I am also in the market to replace the OEM speaker in my 06M3 hatch, please keep us posted on what you finally settle on. Thanks

Methinks I might mosey on over to Tweeters today....

Bring a CD with you. Once you are in the store listening to songs you know well...your ears will tell you which speakers are best for you....then your wallet will tell you otherwise. Then you make your ears and wallet compromise and pick something in between.

I plan on it. Although I'd be curious as to how much different the in store display will sound compared to inside my car. My main concern is getting decently smooth treble response. I hate tizziness!(shocked)

Just remember to stand to the side of the speakers not directly in front. This will be closer to the angle they will be at when you mount them in your doors.

I bought 2 pairs of Infinity 6812CF's off of eBay for about $15.00 per pair. They are due to be here next week. I will let you know how they sound once i get them in the car.

cool! do you know if the tweeters are moveable (adjustable to aim)?

Was perusing ebay last night & saw lots of the 6812CF listed at pretty good prices.Plus the component model 6810 CS, which might work for the fronts, at around $90/apair.
Will be interested in hearing your impressions of the 6812s after instalation. Not sure yet if I'm up to tangling with self-installing, but..

I popped my passanger side door panel off just to see if the P.O. had changed the stock speakers, and find out exactly what i was dealing with. 2 screws and the door panel pops off with a little effort! Piece of cake!.

HOWEVER, i did scratch my paint in a couple of places popping the door panel off. I would highly recommend buying one of those door panel removal tools, then covering it with some cloth tape to prevent scratching the door paint. granted you cant see the scratches but still it bugs me. I have some touch up paint and i will fix those marks next time i pull the panels off during speaker installation.

I am going to look at how easy it would be to remove the tweeters from one set of speakers and remount them in the tweeter location. But. Tang Band and Hi Vi both make some really nice near full range 2" drivers. and having the tweets up there really isnt what you want anyway. the Midrange is where you get all the imaging from anyway. So i may play with making some shallow extentions and mounting some Tang Band 2" drivers in the tweeter area to cover the mid/upper mid section. If matched carefully. should yield a nice clean wide image.

But for now. the 6812's will suffice.

P.S. My original plan was to cut out the speaker grills from the door panels and mount the Momo's there. that would look really nice.

where would one find that door tool you mention?
Also saw some MB Quart component systems on ebay, but the woofers have one of those bullet shaped dust caps which seem to protrude out beyond the front edge of the basket, so not sure if it's "nose woud get crushed" behind the stock grills. My hope if I do the self install is to keep it simple, try to get some dyna-mat in there somehow & not break anything! =)
Seems to be lots of favorable reviews of the Infinitys around the web, so those are lookin' might sweet right about now

re:remount the tweeters. Have you looked at the Infinity 6810CS system?

The door panel tool can be purchased at any auto parts store pretty much. it looks like a screw driver with a flat wide end with a slot in the middle. sort of like a spatula witha grove down the center. you slid it up under to door panel, and around the plastic rivet pop panel thing and pry and it pops the panel loose. (boy that doesnt sound too technical but you get the drift!)

Yes i looked at the infinity component set. but i could get the 6812's much cheaper. If the component set is the same thing then that would be better. and at $15.00 per pair i can yank the tweets out and play with them without loosing sleep over it!

MOST of the drivers that have the "phase plug" you speak of, the tip does not extend past the edge of the cone. that would defete the purpose of it. It may be an optical illusion you see in the photo's. BUT, i dont like those drivers for a car anyway as there is nothing to protect dust dirt and small magnetic particles from getting into the voice coil gap! In a clean home environment you can get away with it. but a car its just not a good idea. it does seem to be the fasion trade du jour.

Thats what did in my LAST set of infinitys! I had a set of the first generation 6x9 Kapp 3 ways with the REAL emit tweeter in them! A small piece of metal or rust or who knows what got into the V.C gap and rubbed through the enamel of the V.C. wires and shorted them out. Poof no more woofer or amp for that matter!
