We were made aware of Pixie’s situation in April 2010. We heard there was a pony who had been passed along and the new owners could not deal with Pixie’s condition. She had been with the current owners for around 8 weeks. They had quickly realised that the care she required was far too much for them to handle.
When we first laid eyes on Pixie she was an absolute picture! Skinny as a rake, feet that looked like clogs and a coat that that was greasy, smelly and in very poor condition. It took two baths to get the stench out of her coat, but she didn’t complain, even though it was freezing cold. We put a rug on her and gave her a big feed.
She fell into the ‘2 feeds a day’ routine very quickly, nickering whenever she saw someone just in case it was meal time again! She was seen by the vet and had her teeth done. He estimated her to be in her 30’s and said her teeth were appalling. He said she would have been in pain for many years and doing something as basic as eating would only have exacerbated the pain. She then had her feet trimmed, again something that had not been done in a long time.
Pixie’s recovery was quite magical. Her condition improved within 7 days. Her ribs started to disappear and her coat hanger hips became well covered. She partnered up with Jim Jam, our other most senior resident and has been maintaining her good health ever since. She has her feet trimmed every 4 weeks and still is on two feeds a day. She is a very sweet pony who will see out her days at Harmony Reins.
