MR CUONG DUONG
General Surgeon Specialising in Advanced Laparoscopic Surgery

Mr Cuong Duong attained his medical degree (MBBS) with honours from Melbourne University in 1993 and completed surgical training (FRACS) in 2006. He undertook further training with world leaders in New York (Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Centre), Tokyo (National Cancer Institute), Seoul (Yonsei Medical Centre) and Brisbane (Princess Alexandra Hospital).

Mr Duong is well known for his advanced laparoscopic surgical techniques, ranging from complex cancer surgery (oesophagectomy, gastrectomy, adrenalectomy, splenectomy) to general benign conditions (gastroesophageal reflux disease, morbid obesity, gallstone disease, inguinal/incisional/ventral hernia). He is a pioneer in Australia for performing laparoscopic vagal nerve-sparing total gastrectomy. The benefits of minimally invasive surgical techniques for patients are reduced pain, reduced hospital stay (e.g. total gastrectomy patients being discharged on day 2 – 3 following surgery), early return to work and minimal scarring.

Mr Duong is actively involved in both clinical and lab-based research in the attempt to improve outcomes for his patients. He attained his Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) from Melbourne University in 2006 and supervises PhD students as well as many surgical trainees.

Mr Duong is a senior Upper GI surgeon at the Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre and also works within the Western Health network and Epworth Freemason Hospital. He consults and provides general surgical support for Dr Gastroenterology. Mr Duong also performs both gastroscopy and colonoscopy on site at Dr Scope.
