Importing CR2 files to Lightroom

I am hoping someone can help me.
I have been using Digital Photo Professional to edit all my raw images as this is what came with my camera (Canon T1i). But I would like to try using Lightroom 2.3. However whenever I try to import files from my raw files (.CR2) into lightroom I get the following error "the files appear to be unsupported or damaged". I have searched everywhere to try to discover the reason for this. I have tried importing directly from the camera, as well as from my harddrive, but I am getting the same error.
Anyone that is currently using lightroom and the Canon Rebel T1i, or anyone for that matter, that can help would be greatly appreciated.
