2013 USA BMX rule changes.

I like some of these rules but don't agree with some of them to.  Input from any of you fellow racers?

All the rule changes for USABMX in 2013
1,  No clip shoes allowed for novices
2, You must race in at least 6 local races to be eligible for a State Plate.
3, Experts will be plates separately than novices and intermediates. Experts will go for a plate and novices and intermediates will be combined for a plate.
4, NAG plates will go to 1-20 in the boys classes
5, Riders can choose to race in any or all of the three finals. For example, we can choose to go west instead of central. You could also choose east if you like.
6, At local races, a Girl (expert) has the option of racing the girls class or the expert class. This must be decided when registering. It can change from race to race.
7, Riders moving from intermediate to expert now need 20 wins. Those riders with 20 - 24 wins will be moved to 19 wins on January 1.
8, Riders must race at the Grands in order to get a NAG plate.
9, State finals will be worth double state points. Instead of 20 points for a win, an expert will get 40.

Re: 2013 USA BMX rule changes.

I will start,  I love the new rule about the girls choosing there class. So many times at my local track a 10 year old has to race 6 year old girls and she would rather race the boys.  The clips I think every rider should be able to choose if you were going to put that rule in you should have set a age limit to kids 9 and under.  I rode clips as a novice, and I did it because they keep my feet on the pedals as I race, any other time I ride flats and I love them.   The 20 win rule was in state 12 years ago dont know why they changed it but ok.

The nag rules good changes,  State plates to the experts seprate from inter and novice is dope for them huge race areas.

Re: 2013 USA BMX rule changes.

I think the clip pedal rule is dumb. The rule should stay how it was. You can use clips regardless if your a novice or pro. How are novices going to ever get good or better if they can't practice with clips. 95 percent plus racers use clip pedals.....

Re: 2013 USA BMX rule changes.

I can't tell you how many kids in the novice class I've seen fall all over the place in clips. Guess who put them in them? Let the kids learn fundementals before strapping them to their bikes.

As an older rider, if you can ride clips, you are no novice. Plain and simple.

The no clips for novice rule is to keep everyone off them until they are ready.

I saw a dude practically wipe out the whole gate trying to balance on clips and completely lose it during his motos. TWICE.

No rule about not being able to practice on them, just can't race 'em.

Best rule ever!

The accumulated filth of all their sex and murder will foam up about their waists and all the whores and politicians will look up and shout "save us"...

And I'll look down and whisper "no".

At my track I don't notice that, but I guess your right.

Re: 2013 USA BMX rule changes.

I've seen a 5 expert being held with clips at the gate.  I do like the new rule about the clips.  My son  is 6  intermediate he can balance at the gate with ease soon he will be in clips the clips are a big advantage when racing the down side is the injuries  are more     severe

Re: 2013 USA BMX rule changes.

I agree with the rule change for clip, I think bike control is more important than a parent trying to give the child an advantage and end up getting someone hurt.

I do not agree with the separation of experts from the other classes at state races, I think there should not be classes at all, you should race by age groups likes the UCI, that will tell you who is really number 1.

Re: 2013 USA BMX rule changes.

So me at 40, riding clips my hole life on road and MTB, has to race platforms because your kid should not be in them?

I know why they did the new rule on them, but Im not to happy.  Riding normal peddles feels ackward to me.  Ive riden mtb and road clips for over twenty years recreationally, not racing.  I've gotten into BMX racing with my younger kids last year.  I'm certainly a novice, and likely will never be an expert.

Taking away my clips just made me a crappier racer.  It took away some of my bike control.  It increased my chance of injury.

Re: 2013 USA BMX rule changes.

I like the rules.  My son who has one win in intermediate, still struggles with clips.  I agree novice shouldnt be wearing clips because most of them fall over on the gate.  They get seriously hurt when they fall racing.  I totally agree with the rest of the rules.  It sounds like its kinda relaxing the rules a bit except for clips.

Re: 2013 USA BMX rule changes.

There is more changes to the rules to.   OPENS will be " open wheeled"  meaning cruisers will race 20s   I am trying to find a full list of rule changes.       As for the clip rule, I told my kids they couldnt race clips till they turned inter.  But that was my choice!!!! NOT A RULE

Re: 2013 USA BMX rule changes.

I think the new rules reflect an overall focus on letting the rider develop slowly.  Spending a year or two in the novice ranks is a good deal for young kids.  It allows them to feel some success, and also develop riding skills without trying to ride above their heads.  Even now, once a rider moves up to INT there is generally quite a learning curve still.  Let the kids just get on their bikes, without pressure or things like clip pedals, and ride.

For adults it should be a choice IMHO.  And perhaps the choice is given in that you can always jump up to INT if you want to clip in.

I personally don't like the new Redline Cup qualifying rule of two qualifying scores plus the weekend final scores.  Just means more traveling to even be in contention for a plate.  I guess you just have to pick a series (National, State or Redline) and go for it.

Re: 2013 USA BMX rule changes.

If you're a novice and want to use clipless, just elect to move yourself up to Intermediate. If you are skilled enough to use clipless, you are probably skilled enough with other aspects to run with intermediates anyways.

Using clipless in novice class is like fishing in a barrel or going to a game preserve for a turkey hunt. The rule change is meant to encourage those who try BMX for the first time to not get discouraged and quit when paired with disproportionate skills in a class that should be reserved for those who are trying to learn the "basics"...such as speed, balance, and riding over piles of dirt.

Re: 2013 USA BMX rule changes.

Fine with flats.  10 wins for Novies...fine with that.  I just wonder how all that will come into play as I search for local tracks that don't have a 40+ Novice class.  Sure I'll take the expert points, but I'm having a hard time crossing the line at the 1 spot :|

Meh, I'm gonna race regardless, but I'd like to strive toward movin up at some point.  Hey Capt....May start comin to Waukegan.  Need a few more old farts there....

Simple, just race intermediate, they will let you.

I'm a 40+ novice, run clips on my mountain bike and flats on my BMX, it is not dangerous at all.

Love the rule, it just made me more competitive with the novice riders, and I'll still get beat by the inters.

Re: 2013 USA BMX rule changes.

Just emailed USA BMX regarding the "no clips for novices". For those of us 41+ and over 10 wins to move up and then be able to use clipless pedals could take a very long time. At my track we almost never have a novice moto for my age group. So usually I have to race intermediates and experts from the 28-35 group. So am I supposed to beat them 7 times on flats? If I could do that I'd be killing my class at Grands. Hopefully there is a change or addendum to this rule.

you have to race 6-10 single point regular races then the 3 qualifiers then the SCF race to get a state plate.

Its to keep people from just going to the 3 qualifiers and finals out of state.  If I wanted to i could hit up 5-6 different state plates within a 3-4 hr drive.  I think its their attempt to keep the plates in state rather than a mini-national type thing.

If you are put up with inter's/exp the class is called Inter there for the no clip rule dosnt apply.  It will only apply on a Novice gate.

what i meant was state qualifiers, not 3 races.

Even if that is true, it doesn't really make much of a difference. Basically, then they are saying that I don't have the skills to ride clipless pedals, unless I'm in a moto where I have little chance of winning in which case then all of a sudden I'm good to go. Which means I don't which pedals I'll have on my bike until motos post based solely on who shows up that night. Unless I ride cruiser which has no such rule to address day one riders and clipless pedals.

Essentially, no matter which way you try to spin it, the rule is pretty poorly thought out. In all fairness though, since I haven't seen anything through official channels what we have gotten may be incomplete or complete bollocks.
