What is Interest Level (IL)?
Interest Level is based on content - a book's themes and ideas - and indicates for which age group a book is appropriate. We group content appropriateness into four categories: LY = Lower Years, ages 5-8; MY = Middle Years, ages 9-13; MY+ = Middle Years Plus, ages 12 and above, and UY = Upper Years, ages 14 and above.
What is ATOS Book Level (BL)?
ATOS Book Levels are calculated using the ATOS readability formula and represent the difficulty of the text. The ATOS readability formula is applied to all the text that appears in a book and looks at three things: average sentence length, average word length, and word difficulty level. The higher Book Level a book has, the more difficult it will be to read. ATOS book levels are consistent, reliable and objective measures of text complexity, but they do not take the plot or themes of the book into account. This is why we assign Interest Levels to books, too.
What is a Lexile® measure?
A Lexile measure represents the complexity of a text, such as a book or article. Lexile measures are expressed as numeric measures followed by an “L” (for example, 850L), and are placed on the Lexile scale. The Lexile scale is a developmental scale for measuring reader ability and text complexity, ranging from below 200L for beginning readers and beginning-reader materials to above 1600L for advanced readers and materials.

Values displayed as Lexile® measures that are not followed by an “L” are estimates of Lexile text measures based on a study conducted by MetaMetrics® using ATOS Book Levels and are not certified Lexile measures.
What are Accelerated Reader Points (AR Pts)?
Every book that has an AR Reading Practice Quiz is given a point value. AR Points are computed based on the difficulty of the book (ATOS readability level) and the length of the book (number of words). AR Points are a way of measuring how much reading practice your child is getting.
