ABC Amateur Race Club celebrates 100 years!

In 2010 the ABC Amateur Race Club will be celebrating 100 years of operation.  What a tremendous achievement this will be.  The Club will be celebrating in style and we invite you to join us.  So, if you have ever been involved with the ABC Amateur Race Club or the Barkly Region of the Northern Territory, 2010 is the year to plan a trip back.  If you've never made it to the "Brunette Races" before, but always wanted to, make 2010 the year of your big trip.

17th to 20th June 2010

If you have old photos, newspaper clippings, programs, or would be interested in being interviewed about your past experiences, we want to hear from you!  A book on the history of the Race Club and the surrounding area is being compiled to commemorate the Centenary.

Many special events are being planned in addition to the standard program, and there will be plenty to see and do; from memorabillia and photography exhibitions to helicopter joyflights, guest speakers, entertainers and a Dinner to commemorate the Centenary.

We also require volunteers to assist with various aspects of the event, so if you like getting involved, register your details as a volunteer.

SCRAP HEAP SCULPTURE COMPETITION

Build a Scrap Heap Sculpture and be in the running to win $1000!

ABC Amateur Race Club is conducting a Scrap Heap (recycled metals) Sculpture Competition.  The winning entry will be erected at the Club grounds to commemorate the Club’s Centenary.

Competition is open to individuals and collaborations.

Sculptures submitted should be no larger than 2.6m3 and no smaller than 1.6m3.  They must be free standing and mounted on 300mmx300mmx3mm plate steel.

Sculptures should be produced from recycled metal and/or metal components and must be suitable for long term outdoors exhibition.

Inspiration for the Sculpture should be “100 years of bush racing heritage”

So if you hanker to create with a welder, or have flair with wire, get creating.   The winning Sculpture will receive $1000 and be erected in pride of place.

HISTORY

The ABC Amateur Race Club was formed in 1910 by three cattle stations located on the Barkly Tableland, Northern Territory.  Alexandria, Brunette Downs and Creswell Downs each lent the Club the first letter of their name, and so the "ABC Amateur Race Club" was born.  Alexandria and Brunette Downs are still stations in their own right, while Cresswell Downs is operated as part of Walhollow.

The Club held their race meets at a variety of locations before settling in its current location after the parcel of land located within the Brunette Downs boundary was handed over to the Club for the purpose of developing their own race track.  The facilities you see today are a testament to many years of dedication from Committee members and helpers.
