- What are the Health Risks Associated with Asbestos?
Asbestos is a known carcinogen. The inhalation of asbestos fibres is known to cause Mesothelioma, Lung Cancer and Asbestosis. The risk from asbestos becomes apparent when the asbestos fibres become airborne and people are exposed to these fibres. Asbestos containing material can release fibres whenever they are disturbed.
- What is the difference between Bonded and Friable Asbestos?
Bonded Asbestos containing material contains a bonding compound reinforced with asbestos fibres; e.g. fibro sheeting. Asbestos containing material is considered friable when it can easily be crumbled, pulverised or reduced to powder by hand pressure; e.g. sprayed on fireproofing / insulation, or fired damaged fibro sheeting.
- What are my responsibilities when engaging an Asbestos Removalist?
You must ensure the asbestos removal is carried out by a suitably qualified removalist for the type of asbestos to be removed (i.e. friable or bonded). These qualifications should be requested. You should also ensure that the asbestos is disposed of correctly with a waste transport certificate provided to you by the removalist, or the person responsible for the disposal.
- What Qualifications do you require to remove and dispose of asbestos containing materials?
Bonded – Either all persons involved with the removal require a "Bonded Removal Certificate", or, workers without this qualification may remove the asbestos if they are directly supervised by an A Class Asbestos Removalist.
Friable – Friable asbestos removal must only be undertaken by an A Class Removalist with the relevant Prescribed Activity Certificates.
To dispose of asbestos, the carrier must have a certificate issued from the Environmental Protection Agency which allows them to transport and dispose of asbestos.
