What is a TLD and ccTLD?
TLD stands
for "Top Level Domain". TLDs consist of letters after a dot, for
example .com and .net. There are many TLDs which are specifically
for countries. These are known as "country code Top Level Domain" (ccTLDs).

The .au domain is a "top
level domain" (TLD) for Australia or more specifically Australia's
"country code Top Level Domain" (ccTLD).
What are "open 2LDs" and "closed 2LDs"?
The .au domain is sub-divided into a
number of 2LDs (Second Level Domains). .AU 2LDs are divided into 2
categories, open 2LDs and closed 2LDs. Open 2LDs are those that are
basically open to all users, subject to some eligibility criteria.
Closed 2LDs are those with a defined community of interest that are
closed to the general public. It is not possible to register domain
names as 2LDs directly under .au.
What are "3LDs"?
2LDs under .au are letters followed
by .au, for example ".com.au". All .au domain names are registered
as third level domains (3LDs), for example "anakin.com.au".
What other restrictions do I need to know about
when registering a .au domain name?
Domain names must:
a) be at least 2 characters long;
b) contain only letters (a-z), numbers (0-9) and hyphens (-), or a
combination of these;
c) start and end with a number or a letter, not a hyphen; and
d) not contain hyphens in the third and fourth position (eg.
ab--cd.com.au).
Each specific domain name can only be registered once. If someone
else has registered your desired domain name, you cannot register
it.
What are the common 2LDs in Australia?
The options for Australian domain names are listed
below: .com.au – basic commercial usage
.net.au– basic commercial usage
.id.au – for Austrial citizens
.org.au – charities, clubs, and non-profits here
.asn.au – political organisations

domain names.
Can I register a 2LD
for .com or .net?
For international domains such as .com, .net
and .org, a second-level domain (2LD) is the portion of the domain
name that is located immediately to the left of the dot. Eg. The 2LD
in example.com is example. When registering an
international domain name, you define the 2LD when registering it.
Although example in example.com.au can be considered a 2LD,
in Australia we usually consider .com.au as the 2LD and
example.com.au as a third-level domain (3LD).
